Happy Friday Titans,

WOW! Can you believe that we are already nearing the end of our first 9 weeks of school? Time is surely flying by, and we have accomplished much since the start of school! Since Curriculum Night, we have put on a myriad of engagement activities such as "Get Connected Night," "6th Grade Bring your Parent to School Day," our 8th Grade Savannah Trip, and Parent University Workshops, all with one ultimate mission...to keep our school Smart, Happy, and Connected!

Today, during our Teacher Work Day, our Teacher-Led Personalized Learning team trained their peers by sharing highly effective teaching strategies to support Rigor, Student Collaboration, and Organization. Also, our TAG Certification Cohort led by Jennifer Okiyama trained 13 teachers to acquire additional TAG strategies, tools, and resources to support the work of Personalized Learning. These teachers will be able to bring their new strategies into the classroom with our TAG, Advanced, and On-Level students. During our Full Release Days, we will continue to use our time to roll out new and innovative teaching methods.

Our SGC has just begun the work to establish our Strategic Plan which will incorporate the new goals of the District’s Strategic Plan. Please take a moment to look at the slide below to see the District's Goals, and how we at Elkins Pointe, are so nicely set up to accomplish the District’s mission for school improvement. It may be a coincidence or perhaps it is just me, but it seems that Superintendent Jeff Rose's goals align so beautifully with our Smart, Happy and Connected mission.

"Welcome Back from Savannah" to our 8th-grade students and teachers! Parents, we truly appreciate you for trusting us with your children. This authentic opportunity allowed students to gain a real-world approach to learning in a tactile way. Our students saw with their very own eyes the First Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave one of his most famous speeches. Just before boarding a Riverboat, they savored pecan clusters, candy apples, and salt water taffy from River Street Sweets. While breathing in the salty air, they listened to the crash of the surf on Tybee Island. Our 8th-graders (and maybe a brave teacher) clambered up the wooden ladders at Fort King George. Our Titans traversed the streets of Plains, GA, the home of President Jimmy Carter. This trip will be remembered for a lifetime, and it is an honor to have impacted our students.

Now that you have a feel for the kind of learning we wish for each student at Elkins Pointe to experience, I would like to point out that THIS is the type of learning our PTSA is working so hard to raise additional funds to support. Through the PTSA Annual "BEYOND THE CLASSROOM" Campaign, students at every grade level will experience learning they can "Taste, Feel, See, Hear and Smell!" Please GIVE! If you have not given, please do so, and if you have given, please consider becoming a Business Partner or sponsoring one of the PTSA programs, Thursday Clubs, or a teacher's project.

At the 9 week mark, we have been "moving and shaking!" We are halfway to our goal of raising $15K, but halfway means we need $15K more! A huge "Thank You" to all who have moved our mission of Smart, Happy and Connected forward.

Enjoy your long weekend Titans!

PTSA Financial Update

It’s been a busy two months for Elkins Pointe PTSA! Thank you to everyone who has joined the PTSA – we are 621 members strong as of the end of September. And a big THANK YOU to everyone who made a “Beyond the Classroom” donation. We have raised $16,841 in academic enrichment donations so far. That’s over halfway to our goal of $30,000! With school store revenues and spiritwear purchases, we’re closing in on 60% of our fundraising goal. How can you help? If you or your student are not members, sign up now! If you haven’t donated to the Enrichment Fund, now’s the time! Take advantage of employer matching programs to double your gift! Participate in upcoming spirit nights and if you own a business, check out our business partner program.

Where does your money go? So far this year, the PTSA has spent money on the following:

· Purchased the pizza for the 6th grade “Camp Titan” and their WEB Leaders

· Stocked the school store so last minute supply needs are no worries

· Treated the teachers and staff to a “welcome back” lunch before school started

· Published and mailed a Back to School Guide full of helpful information to start your school year

· Funded the inaugural “Get Connected” Night

· Purchased snacks and supplies for the student support closet

· Hosted an awesome tailgate party for 6th graders

· Paid for our annual operating costs, like our audit, insurance, Council Dues and forms and supplies

In the next month or so, the PTSA will be sponsoring Red Ribbon Week, the Reflections contest and the 7th-grade dance. Teachers have submitted applications for mini-grants and club grants and we’ll let you know about those soon. WE are doing wonderful work together!!!

Smart Happy & Connected Things!

Holocaust Memorial Museum at Elkins Pointe

On Oct. 4th, our 6th grade Social Studies students turned the Media Center in the Washington DC Holocaust Museum. Students created an artifact exhibit, with a shoe memorial on the Media Center wall, black and white newsreel movie, and displays of borrowed Jewish treasures. The Exhibit will be on display until Oct. 13th. All parents and students are invited to visit. Thank you to 6th grade Social Studies teachers, Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Gallagher, for making this exhibit possible.

8th Grade GA Trip!

We are so happy that our 8th graders have returned from their Savannah Trip. What a fortunate opportunity they have experienced. This trip is designed to enhance the 8th grade Social Studies curriculum. Our 8th graders will be able to visualize their travels as they learn the History of Georgia.

Thank you to our Savannah chaperones: Burris, Ramsay, Striggles, White, Bolson, Purvis, Palmer, Bearden, Billups, Tongue, Hardigree, Palermo, Tyus, Wallace, Jones, Leventhal. Thank you for your time and supervision. You had an impact on a memorable experience for our kids.

Thank you also to the 8th-grade teachers who stayed behind to keep it all together, Wampler, Williams, Vogel, Feilen, Goodrich, Osborne, Mendy - Thank you!!!

Happy Custodians Week to Miss Edith!

Our head custodian, Miss Edith Woodruff has single-handedly been holding down the fort! Miss Edith connects our building in ways that you could never imagine. She is the first one in in the morning and has been the last one to leave at night. Miss Edit unlocks our doors, set the cafeteria up, assembles furniture, cleans the frequent spills in hallways, and the list goes on, and on, and on.... Miss Edith interacts with every teacher, staff member, student, and PTSA. We could not host dances without her and for that reason Miss Edith our Batman! If you want to know what fuels Miss Edith it is coffee strong coffee..Krispie Kreme to be exact!!!

Spin with the Eagles - 10/12 & 10/13

Milton High School's Marching Band and its Colorguard are hosting an event this fall, a "mini-camp" designed to expose students in Kindergarten through 8th grade to Colorguard. Colorguard is an activity that involves spinning flags, rifles, sabers and combines marching precision with dance and movement elements. Colorguard is the "visual ensemble" that performs alongside and complements the marching band.

This event, called "Spin with the Eagles," provides elementary and middle school-aged students an opportunity to try out Colorguard and see if this is an activity they may want to pursue during their middle school and high school careers.

For a nominal fee of $30, participants will receive instruction from Milton High's award-winning Colorguard director during two October practices (October 12 & 13) after school, have dinner with the Milton High School Colorguard before the homecoming football game against South Forsyth High School on October 13th, march into the stadium with the Varsity Colorguard before the game, sit in the stands with the Varsity Colorguard at the game, receive a free t-shirt commemorating the event, and most importantly perform on the field with the Varsity Colorguard during halftime of this game.

To register for "Spin with the Eagles," see the attached link: http://miltonband.org/spinwitheagles For information "Spin with the Eagles" or on the upcoming cadet program, contact guardvp@miltonband.org
