Once again, YOU ROCKED IT!
The anniversary celebration on Wednesday was phenomenal. The guests were impressed beyond reality. Between the STEM activities, technology, high student engagement and fabulous smiles, there was a buzz in the building. It was so much fun to see people connect with their friends, and we even had a student who was here in 7th grade in 1956! We also had teachers from way back when and they were so happy to be here again and some ran into their students. The changes are awesome, but the quality and character have remained the same. What a special treat to have Debbie Cathey’s son here to share his lineage and history as a student. The ‘June Cleavers’, Corinne and Kathy, kept the refreshments looking inviting and took care of so many 'party' details while Barb Hartin ended up being the official greeter/hostess for so many friends and former colleagues.
Thank you for all you did to make the day a success, but truly, the quality instruction was not that different from any other day at JBD, as standards are high and stay high. We could have an open house anytime, any day, and folks would still be just as impressed. The halls and floors looked amazing, thanks to the custodial team. Rose and Amy trained the SCA students to give tremendous tours and the students looked great in their costumes.
The staff spirit was just the absolute best. If we had prizes, Shawn would have won, hands down, with the Star Trek First grade team and Kindergarten Pink Ladies coming in at close second! But then, Julie Cullen was the total 80's girl with her black net tutu and hair bow. Michelle Reed and Nicole Violette rocked the 90s with their beanies and flannels. The rest of you looked so polished and professional and certainly made a great impression. At the end of the day, the smiles made the day a memory. Thanks to you all from the bottom of my heart for continuing to be amazing.

MAKEUP PLAN ANNOUNCED FOR SCHOOL DAYS LOST DUE TO FLOODING
Instructional time missed because of widespread flooding last week will be made up Monday, Oct. 24 and Monday, Jan. 30; two days previously scheduled as Staff Days. This allows students to recoup learning time within the current semester.
This is a change from the previously published 2016-2017 school calendar, which had designated makeup days primarily in the second semester. The calendar was designed taking into consideration that most school closures in Hampton Roads occur as the result of winter storms.
“By adjusting the schedule to make use of Oct. 24, our students (particularly those in semester courses) are not losing valuable time in the classroom,” said Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. “In addition, we are protecting those previously identified makeup days in the second semester, which, given the snow and ice we’ve had in years past, will help us stay prepared for any hazardous winter weather.”
As a reminder, in cases of school closings due to inclement weather or emergency conditions, makeup days will be designated by the superintendent and may include available staff days or holidays. The 2016-2017 school calendar has been updated to reflect the changes in makeup days and is available on vbschools.com
