Wildcat Roar
NEWS AND INFO FOR WILDCAT STAFF 8.20
AFFIRMATION OF THE WEEK
Remember the 11:1 ratio? Watch the video above. Are there opportunities you may have overlooked that give students the opportunity to feel valued, appreciated, and challenged? Are there ideas from the video that you can use to help you counteract the 11:1 ratio? The first 5 people to send Ms. Kemp one missed opportunity you will take this year will win a prize.
Testing is finally over! While some students may be individually pulled for make-up testing, all classes should now (finally) be following the regular schedule.
Reminders:
- Now that we are fully engaged in academics, remember to upload lesson plans to the folders linked below.
- Even though the first few weeks are over, our commitment to SEL and restorative practices should remain strong and woven throughout academic instruction.
- It's time to prepare for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Look for details below.
PBL TIMELINE - YOU ARE HERE
Remember:
- The point of the Entry Event is NOT to directly teach content, give students all of the answers, or tell them how to think. The purpose of the Entry Event is to expose students to a problem and spark questions in the minds of students.
- Don't "teach content" and then begin the project. The Entry Event comes before you teach content. It creates the reason students should care about the content. PBL is not the dessert. It's the main course.
PBL To Do This Week:
- Host the event.
- Give students an opportunity to reflect.
- Gather what students "Know" and "Need to Know" to solve the problem in a T-chart (or another form of gathering responses). This document is "living" and can possibly grow throughout the project. What's important to remember is that gathering what they need to know creates a purpose for the content instruction that will come next.
TEAM MANAGEMENT PLANS
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
- Conferences will take place Friday, August 24, from 1:30 - 4 pm.
- Each team will meet with parents in the science lab on their grade level. The team can meet with each parent.
- You will receive an agenda and answers to FAQ to use in the conference. Conferences should follow the following structure:
2. Describe the SEL focus from the beginning of the year. You may consider asking parents to try a sample activity (shortened, of course).
3. Describe what students will be learning over the rest of the quarter. Provide them with a scope and sequence for the unit.
4. Share student data (GMAS, MAP). This will be provided for you.
5. Describe observed strengths and weaknesses. Share your plan for growth and give parents 2-3 strategies they can implement to support their child.
5. Close the conference with a positive statement about the child again, and your optimism for their growth.
A detailed FAQ document will be provided to help you explain SEL, PBL, etc.
DO:
- Lead and close with POSITIVE reflections of EACH child.
- Avoid ANY hint of condescension or sarcasm.
- Give parents resources.
DON'T
- Begin a conference with negative student behaviors or solely focus on what students are doing wrong, especially in the beginning of the year.
- NEVER display negative feelings you may have about a student. Speak objectively about the behaviors exhibited, what the expectations are, and what the outcomes will be with both exhibited and desired behavior.
- NEVER use sarcasm or condescension with families.
- NEVER speak to students in a way that you wouldn't use in front of parents. You will instantly lose credibility with students with disingenuous communication. If you wouldn't say it in front of a child's mother, don't say it. In other words, don't be fake.
PICTURE DAY - AUGUST 22
Picture Day Schedule (Wednesday August 22):
Pictures will take place in the gym lobby. All classes will enter through the side of the gym lobby and exit out the front of the gym. If classes arrive early, they will sit along the wall in the courtyard. Teachers are expected to supervise their classrooms.
