Dear Kincaid Families,

I am very proud of our students and our staff at Kincaid for overcoming the obstacles related to school building closures as we moved to distance learning. Good things are happening in every classroom. In this week's edition of our Coyote Howler, I would like to share with you things that are taking place in our "on-Line" communities. I hope you enjoy these highlights.

Thank you parents and guardians for supporting your child through the process of learning from home. You are all incredible!

Pen Pals

To encourage writing, Mrs. Alward is now pen-pals with her students. Mrs. Alward has a treasure of letters on a bulletin board in her own home.

"I sure miss my sweet kids from school! We have been writing letters to each other as part of our online learning. This board just warms my heart and let’s me know it’s all good. We are all in this together. ❤️ Go Coyotes!"

Engineers in the Making

Fourth graders had a special guest speaker last Friday! Mr. Baski, a civil engineer, spoke to us about the different types of engineering and the role engineers play to help our communities. During the meeting, students were challenged to build a tower with three pieces of paper and tape. Students shared their strategies for how they approached the exercise and some of the solutions they used to complete the project. Afterwards, the students asked great questions and also shared projects they have been working on at home. Thank you Mr. Baski!

Live Field Trip to Prince William Sound

Our sixth grade students had a great, live field trip, with our very own Mr. Popek. He was teaching about the equipment, procedures, and requirements, related to shrimp fishing. It was a gorgeous day, with calm waters, out in Prince William Sound.

A second field trip will be offered TODAY at 2:00 pm during Mrs. Zorea's Zoom Meeting. This will only be offered if the weather cooperates. Safety is always first when fishing Prince William Sound.

Chromebook Computer Distribution

We were able to distribute 60 computers to our Kincaid Coyote families last week. Parents picked up the computers safely, through our curb-side pick-up. Our teachers made personal phone calls during the first week after spring break to find out the needs of our community. All families who reported a need for a device were offered one.

Ignite Classes

Mrs Zoske has been challenging her students through a variety of activities since going online. One project was a challenge to create a Rube Goldberg Machines. "A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated fashion, generally including a chain reaction The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg." Check out these videos of our Kincaid Coyotes excited about their Rube Goldberg machine. We have an intermediate student and primary student showing off their projects. I bet this project is something that many of you could do at home too. To open the links, you must use your google drive.

Music Classes

Ms. Lang has been visiting classrooms during their online Zoom meetings. If students are interested in music instruction, and it is not a music day, they can visit her website anytime. Here is a glimpse of what students will find while browsing the website. This is a kindergarten lesson and song. To find access her website visit here: Music with Ms. Lang

Hey Kincaid! As we find ourselves having to spend more and more time online for a myriad of things, it is so important to get up and get moving. Here is a link to an article from the Mayo Clinic entitled What Are the Risks of Sitting Too Much?

Fortunately, there are all kinds of ways to give yourself brief breaks from sitting still and staring at the screen even when you don’t have time for a longer exercise session. Here is one from Hip Hop Health that is under 10 minutes. You can even do this one from your chair, but you won’t be sitting still. It’s cool, it’s fun, and it will make your core stronger. You’ll be tutting before you know it!

I hope you are all staying well and keeping your spirits up through this challenging time.
