Viking Leadership Academy Begins Wednesday
This week Howell students will have their first opportunity of the 2017-18 school year to attend the new look Viking Leadership Academy (VLA). The Viking Leadership Academy has gone through some structural and format changes for the 2017-18 school year that will greater serve all students at Howell.
VLA was established to help to develop better persons, better teammates, and better student-participants at Howell. There is a direct correlation between academic, athletic, and activity performance and leadership skills. The goal of VLA is to further grow student leadership skills so that they can contribute more to Howell, their community and to their activities, clubs and sports.
During the 2017-18 school year, VLA will meet twice a month during Howell time. All Howell students are encouraged to attend these interactive sessions. A curriculum that is theme based is used to help develop leadership skills and traits that will help students to be successful at Howell as well as in their activity or sport and ultimately in life. The five themes that are the focus of the VLA program are:
Model It
Inspire Other Vikings
Challenge Other Vikings
Involve All Vikings
Celebrate Viking Accomplishments
What does the Howell staff think about leadership development and the Viking Leadership Academy?
“We really want our players to be more than just football players. We work hard to use the R.I.S.E. core values to help them grow as leaders and community members. It’s important that their experience in our program helps them become great football players and great men.” - Head Football Coach Cory Snyder
“The Viking Leadership Academy is encouraging great character to promote and develop overall strong leaders” - Assistant Girls Soccer Coach Janet Muehling
“It is important to develop future leaders that can influence positive change both in and out of their activity or sport. The leadership development provided will help to influence our programs, school and community.” Head Cross Country and Head Boys Tennis Coach Tracy Carlson
“Francis Howell activities and athletics have the unique ability to positively impact students, parents, families, staff, and the community. The vision, goals, and efforts of our coaches and sponsors are meant to impact Francis Howell High School, it’s families, staff, and the community forever.” The continued efforts to help develop leaders and young men and women that embody our R.I.S.E. core values is at the forefront of what we are focusing on in our programs.” Activities Director Sean Erwin
We hope to see many Howell students on Wednesday during Howell time taking part in VLA. For more updates on VLA and leadership development at Howell please follow @FHVikings on Twitter or follow the efforts in the Viking Insider.
