Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 2nd December 2016
a time of preparation
what is advent?
In school too, we have started to get ready for the busy season ahead. We are really looking forward to our first whole school Christingle Service in the Cathedral on Monday. The children have been practising the hymns which already sound beautiful, so we recommend you join us in the Cathedral at 5pm for this special candlelit service. The Apart from the oranges, kindly donated by Booths, The Children's Society have provided all the Christingle resources and in return we will do some fundraising for them. If you'd like to donate, envelopes will come home next week.

school worship
We are very fortunate to have regular visitors from our local churches for other worship. Canon Ruth, from the Cathedral, leads frequent worship assemblies. Minister Ruth Parry from our local Methodist Church also comes in several times a month. Recently she has been leading 'Godly Play' with the Year 3 class. This Wednesday her focus was, of course, Advent.
We hope you all have the opportunity for some quiet times in December amidst all the hectic rush to be ready for Christmas.
thank you friends of ripon cathedral school!
A group of people who have had loads to prepare recently are the busy and active members of our 'Friends'. They have encouraged lots of businesses local and national, to donate fantastic prizes for the Christmas raffle (make sure you get your tickets!); they have potted hundreds of hyacinth bulbs which sold really well at the Cathedral Christmas Fair; and finally they have arranged for our very own school fair complete with Santa's Grotto on Thursday! Thanks Friends!
arriving on your door mat
We hope the Ripon Review has been delivered to you and that it fell back page facing upwards! Take a look to see our lovely Christmas greeting in a colourful poster designed by the talented Mrs Fowler!
Why not spread the word about our lovely school? January is the deadline for applications to primary schools, so if you know somebody looking for a school place then we would love to show them around.

parent forum
We had our first meeting of the Parent Forum on Monday and were delighted to see so many class reps come along for an hour and a half of lively conversation. The minutes of the meeting are on the website and will be emailed to you. The main focus of this term's meeting was promoting the health and wellbeing of our children. We talked about everything from school dinners to packed lunches to suitable birthday treats, with plenty more in between. Please be sure to read the summary on the website and talk to your rep if you have more ideas.
christmas presents
The Year 6 Charity Group would like to thank everyone who has brought donations to the box in the entrance area. It has been full to overflowing more than once, but don't worry, we're happy to make space for more gifts for local children in need at Christmas time! The deadline for donations is Monday 12th December, thank you.
thank you letter
I just wanted to say a special thank you for inviting me to visit your school last week. I really enjoyed the whole day not least because of the tremendous enthusiasm of the children, the warm welcome I received and the friendliness of the staff.
I was impressed by the atmosphere of the school, the vibrant displays celebrating good work and the sense of a happy learning community – it was like going back in time! I visit over 50 schools a year and see very few primaries which possess all of these qualities (alas) and so you should be very proud of what you’re doing and have achieved.
For me particularly, I was delighted that you clearly understand the importance of reading for pleasure and of getting children to enjoy books. The library is excellent, as is your policy of allowing children to borrow books from it. I hope I did my bit in increasing the kids’ enthusiasm to read and in helping them all see that books can be fun. I was very pleased with the positive response I received to my message about this right through every age group.
All the best with your Christmas celebrations and end of term madness! And thank you again for inviting me along to share some fun.
Kind regards,
Andy
