Wheeler Flash
April 2017
Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
As we move down the homestretch of this school year, I would like to remind you of the reading goal each individual grade level set to achieve by May 31, 2017.
GOALS:
Kindergarten: Students will read 50-75 books. Each class has read well over 75 books!
Grade 1: Students will read 75 books. The students in first grade have exceeded their goal reading over 75 books!
Grade 2: Students will read every day for a minimum of 100 days. Second graders exceeded their goal of reading every day for a minimum of 100 days!
Grade 3: Students will read a variety of genres (biographies, fairy tales, mysteries, informational texts) and track and graph the genres they are reading to identify trends in their reading.
Third graders have been graphing the different genres of books they have been reading. They have used this data to study trends in their reading habits. So far, many kids learned that they love reading fiction and/or informational books the most, and have been challenging themselves to choose books in other genres like poetry.
Grade 4: Students will read 500 books. 4th grade students have collectively read 625 books!
Grade 5: Students will read 500 books. 5th grade students have collectively read 680 books!
As you can see, our students have met their team goal for their individual grade level this year! So to celebrate this achievement, we have invited a trio of musicians called Mikata to our school this month. We are really excited to have them come perform for our students! They start out their performance with powerful African rhythms (their name "Mikata" means "all of us" in the Ewe language of Ghana), then they take the audience on a musical trip to the Caribbean, and they finally end with the sounds and dance of Brazilian Samba. There should be lots of energy, fun, and cultural learning.
We would not be able to fund a performance like this if it weren't for our PTO as well as Mr. Gianni, one of our Wheeler Parents. Through his work, Mr. Gianni earned a certain amount of money through his community volunteer hours and he chose to donate that money to Wheeler. Thank you Mr. Gianni and The Wheeler PTO!
