This Month in Guidance

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. As you know, bullying is a serious problem nation-wide. At Hatfield, we work diligently to prevent bullying. We start by teaching students what bullying is and is not. Students learn how to identify bullying situations, what to do while you're in the situation, and what to do afterward.

We will work on establishing a common vocabulary as well. Please talk to your child about these words and what they mean.

Key Vocabulary

Teasing -- Everyone is having fun; no one is getting hurt; everyone is participating equally.

Conflict – No one is having fun; there is a possible solution to the disagreement; equal balance of power.

Mean Moment – Someone is being hurt on purpose; reaction to a strong feeling or emotion; an isolated event that does not happen regularly.

Bullying – An intentional, repeated, hostile, aggressive behavior of an individual or group with the intention of harming others or gaining power.

Target/Victim – A person selected as an aim for an attack.

Bystander – Children who see bullying behavior happen but do NOTHING about it (standing BY and watching).

Check your child's Thursday folder during the week of their guidance lesson for more information on what they learned.

Kinder-2nd grade students will also learn about our Core Value this month during additional guidance lessons. Our Core Value this month is Courage. Along with their classroom lesson, students will hear daily announcements about what it means to have courage. Please talk to your students about courage and ways they show courage in everyday life. More information will come home in the Thursday folder regarding courage as well.

Who doesn't love clean, warm socks to put on when it starts getting chilly out?! For the rest of the month, we will be collecting new socks to donate to Community Storehouse in Keller. Community Storehouse is such a great resource for our district. The work they do for us is invaluable. They will distribute the new socks to those who need them. This will go hand in hand with our 21 Day Kindness Challenge. Let's show kindness to others we will never meet and will never be able to thank us. THANK YOU for always supporting Hatfield and our community!
