How to Write a Resumé
What Your Resume Can Include:
- Name & Contact Info
- Education (high school only)
- Badges earned
- Work Experience
- Volunteer Experience
- Extracurricular Activities
- Relevant Skills and Languages
- Honors/Awards
Tips:
- Make it easy to read: keep it simple and follow the format.
- Put your experiences in order from most to least recent (aka, put your current stuff before your old stuff)
- For each experience, briefly describe what you did or what you were responsible for. Hiring staff might not be familiar with abbreviations or clubs you mention.
- Make sure to PROOFREAD!
- Don’t worry if it’s short. In fact, it shouldn’t be more than a page long.
How To Write a Cover Letter
You can also choose to submit a non-traditional cover letter in the format of a slideshow (PowerPoint), which could feature text and images of your own creation that address the same themes of who you are and why you want to be an Adler Intern.
What Your Cover Letter Should Include:
- Your name and contact info
- A greeting
- What position you are applying to
- How you are qualified for the job
- Why you want the job (aka, what about the Adler program appeals to you? how will this help you?)
- A polite closing
Consider the following questions to guide your cover letter/slideshow. You don’t need to answer any of them, but they are a good starting place:
- Describe a situation where you identified a problem and took initiative to solve that problem. You may select a situation from your personal life, a job, a club or your school.
- Describe how at least one item in your resume has prepared you to be an intern at the Adler. Make sure to consider the position you are most interested in when you respond, focusing on your first choice.
- Think about what skills and abilities you hope to gain from this internship. Why do you need this opportunity at the Adler more than other applicants might?
Tips:
- Begin your letter with "Dear Adler Teen Programs team" or something else more general.
- Use your letter to go into more detail or offer additional info about yourself. Don't restate your resume word-for-word on your cover letter!
- Reference specific things you read in the job info in your letter -- for example, you saw that a citizen science position is available, and you've always wanted to learn more about how scientists can work with non-science people to do work.
Check out this example letter format for an idea of what cover letters might look like.
