The Mustang Minute

May 3, 2019 - Issue 32

Mindful Before MCAS

This week we ran Shine Bright mindfulness workshops with our sixth grade students to give them tools to stay calm as we head into the Math MCAS. Shine Bright is a local company with Norwood connections. They had previously conducted workshops at some of the elementary schools here in Norwood.

During the 20 minute workshop students learned five skills to help combat anxiety both during the MCAS and during these tough teenage years. The first was breathing as a tool, the second was putting good things into your mind and body, the third was making sure you are thinking clearly, the fourth was creating space when confronted with conflict, and the fifth was using positive self talk to keep your life positive. Ask your student to show you their calming moves and what positive word they chose to help boost their confidence! You can check their website for more information. www.shinebrightworkshops.com

Congratulations! The CMS Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Larry Smith, was awarded a gold medal at the Southeast Junior MAJE festival last night! The students hard work and effort all year certainly paid off!

Youth Impact Norwood

You may or may not have heard of Impact Norwood--a substance use prevention coalition in the community. The purpose of the coalition is to prevent and reduce youth substance use through education, awareness and action, but most importantly, involve youth in this work. Youth are vital to the success of Impact Norwood, because they understand their peers best and know what will resonate with them. A few weeks ago, Aubrey Ciol, the Program Director for Impact Norwood, came to the Middle School and had an information table during lunch periods. Many students were interested and eager to learn more about the group so provided Aubrey with their school email address. I am writing you today to let you know that they will be receiving an email from her in the coming week with information about YOUTH Impact Norwood and giving them the option to attend an after school meeting on Thursday, May 16th from 2:15pm-3:15pm. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me, or Aubrey Ciol at aciol@norwoodma.gov or at 781-762-1240 x171.
