Oh no! mining and fracking
By: Molly, Haley, Robby, Kevin and Ray
Surface Mining vs. Subsurface Mining
- subsurface is going and mining underground to get minerals
- surface mining is digging minerals on the surface
- the difference is that subsurface is underground mining and surface is on the suface
Surface mining: 3 types
Strip Surface Mining
Mining on a flat surface that removes loose minerals
Effects: Landscapes are destroyed leaving a permanet scar on the surface of the mining spot.
Open-pit surface mining
Mining rocks from the surface of a ditch
requires digging into the earth.
Effects: damages environment and mines can collapse
Mountain top removal surface mining
Blowing up the top of a mountain and digging down into it.
Effects: waste trees, and permanent scar on top of mountain.
Subsurface: 3 Types
Slope subsurface mining
drilling down on a hill or slope to access material needed.
Effects: stability of slope can decrease due to more drilling
Drift subsurface mining
drilling horizontally passageway in a mine
Effects: creates an incline that can cause mining to be hard
Shaft subsurface mining
vertical tunneling mining from top to bottom to access underground mining area
Effects: destroys mining area
Fracking
Drilling down into the Earth and injecting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals
