Social Inequality
Fighting the gap
General Infomation
Social inequality is a big issue in our world. What is social inequality, it is the uneven distribution of money. This caused a large gap between the rich and the poor. If left untreated the rich get richer and the poor get more poor. The gap keeps getting bigger with social inequality. It also has negative effects on society such as the increase in crime rates. There tends to be higher crime in societies with bigger/more unequal societies and in addition to that decreasing the difference would lower homicides. Decreasing this gap in the wealth in society, people would be more trusting to others, if there was lower levels of wealth equality and not so concentrated wealth, would have more neighbours helping fellow neighbours.
Gini Coefficient
Social inequality is measured by the Gini Coefficient. A value of 0 expressing that everyone gets the exact same amount of money and a value of 1 being the the highest value of inequality in which case one person has all the money and everybody else gets nothing. To calculate the Gini Coefficient, you need a long formula that can be seen below. As some examples of the Gini Coefficient, Canada’s is 0.324, a slight increase since the mid 70s where it was 0.304. The US’s Gini Coefficient is 0.378, an increase from 0.316 in the mid 70s.
