On the 15th day of the first lunar month on the Gregorian calendar thousands of lanterns take off into the sky.
Traditions
The Lantern Festival has over 2,000 years of traditions for people of all different ages. They watch all that lanterns and fireworks. There are different folk dances performed and lantern riddles to guess.
Lantern Festival Food
Moon Cakes
Mooncakes are Chinese pastries traditionally eaten during the Festival. The festival is for lunar worship and moon watching; moon cakes are regarded as an indispensable delicacy on this occasion.
Yuanxiao
Tāngyuán is a Chinese food made from glutinous rice flour. Glutinous rice flour is mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and is then cooked and served in boiling water. Tangyuan can be either small or large, and filled or unfilled.
Seafood Soup
Seafood Soup is a mixture of seafood and peas with dumplings and is eaten at the Lantern Festival.
