Communi-Key
Cumberland, North Smithfield & Lincoln Prevention Coalitions
October, 2017
October is almost over and hope that you are "finding your routine" as the second month of school is coming to a close. In this edition of Communi-Key, we are doing a feature article on "Vaping". We kindly ask everyone to read this crucial information and reach out with any/all questions you may have. Prevention begins with education.

And before they are buried in snow,
There comes a festival season
When nature is all aglow." -Author Unknown
Vaping: Get Up to Speed with a Growing Teen Trend
RI had the lowest rate of cigarette use in the nation in 2015 for both middle school and high school students, but the soaring popularity of e-cigarettes in those age groups is offsetting that progress.
E-cigarette use and "vaping" among young adults has increased considerably in recent years. In 2015, more than a quarter of students in grades 6 through 12 and more than a third of young adults had ever tried e-cigarettes.
E-cigarette use poses a significant – and avoidable – health risk to young people. Besides increasing the possibility of addiction and long-term harm to brain development and respiratory health, e-cigarette use is associated with the use of other tobacco products that can do even more damage to the body.
Learn the risks about Vaping and here's a great fact sheet to help you start the conversation with your teen.
Teens are also vaping marijuana oils and concentrates. Learn the lingo!
Fortunately, RI recently passed legislation that requires child resistant packaging for e-liquid used in electronic nicotine-delivery systems such as e-cigarettes. In addition, the legislation prohibits use of electronic nicotine delivery systems on school property, the same way cigarettes are banned
This is the PUFFiT vaporizer, a portable unit that resembles an inhaler.
JUUL Vaporizers are becoming extremely prevelent with teens.
With its unique design profile, resembling a USB stick, it appeals to teens because of the flavor variety and lack of lingering smell, portable and easy to use and they consider it a satisfying alternative to cigarettes.
The replaceable "pods" are also being filled with marijuana concentrate oil. With a magnetic charger that can be plugged into a computer, teens are able to disguise this mechanism with ease.

Teal Pumpkin Project: because EVERYONE should enjoy Halloween!
Halloween can be a tricky time for families managing food allergies. Many traditional Halloween treats aren’t safe for children with life-threatening food allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project promotes safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies. This worldwide movement offers an alternative for kids with food allergies, as well as other children for whom candy is not an option. It keeps Halloween a fun, positive experience for all!
Participating is simple. Pick up some inexpensive toys, and place a teal pumpkin and/or a free printable sign from FARE outside your home to show that you have non-food treats to hand out. Supporting the Teal Pumpkin Project is a simple gesture that can have a big impact.
Add your household to the map and connect with other homes in your area that are participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project ! Click HERE for the map!

Hidden in Plain Sight.....Coming to N.Smithfield, Lincoln & Cumberland!
If you haven't seen the interactive exhibit "Hidden in Plain Sight", parents in North Smithfield, Lincoln and Cumberland will have the opportunity during upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences! The Hidden in Plain Sight interactive exhibit has been traveling throughout the State of RI, giving parents a unique opportunity to look into a mock teenager’s bedroom full of 50 common household items that could be used to hide or disguise drug, alcohol, tobacco use or other “risky” behaviors. From Scituate to Portsmouth, and a few stops in between, members of the Cumberland/Lincoln Prevention Coalitions, Pam Shayer & Terri-Lynn Longpre, have had the opportunity to speak & answer questions from more than 250+ parents.
The exhibit will be on display in the upcoming months in North Smithfield, Cumberland & Lincoln, during Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please be on the "lookout" for dates and times, in your community!
