WBMS Friday Notes
May 6, 2022
Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
It’s May, and we have finished Milestones! Our students still have assessments ahead of them, but the state ones are over. Hooray! Students have reported feeling well-prepared and confident, which makes me a happy principal. I look forward to seeing the results of their hard work and the dedication of our educators.
Last Friday’s Talent Show was a huge success. I am always amazed by the courage and hidden gifts displayed at this event. Our students shined brightly and it was such a wonderful sight to witness!
This week’s classroom visits were filled with hands-on learning. I witnessed students designing and building weight-bearing bridges, learning about B-52 boomers and flying paper airplanes, and understanding the uses of catapults and trying them out in the hallways. John Dewey wrote, “Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.” It was beautiful to see this theory in action this week.
Thank you to those of you who wrote emails and sent in notes this week as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week. If you did not have an opportunity to show your gratitude this week, I know they would still love to hear from you this weekend or next week. We have an amazing group of educators at WBMS and I am very grateful for them!
Take care of yourselves during this busy time of year, enjoy your weekend, and Happy Mother’s Day to our wonderful WBMS MOMs!
In collaboration -
Rebecca Williams

Attention Parents of Rising 8th graders- Message from AHS
Greetings students and parents of rising Freshman:
As your middle school journey comes to an end, I hope you have enjoyed your time as you reflect back and that you are looking forward to high school! On behalf of the faculty and staff of Alpharetta High School, we can’t wait to welcome you to Raider Nation! As you are planning for next year, I want to ensure you have the information you need to have a successful year at Alpharetta High School.
Please read this email thoroughly as it provides detailed instructions on how to view the courses your child is scheduled to take next year. Additionally, if you desire to request a change in a course for next year, those instructions are provided as well. All parents and students should view course requests for the 2022-2023 school year in the Campus Parent or Student portal:
- In the portal, select “More” in the menu to the left and then click "Next Year Course Request." A view of the student's course requests is displayed.
- If a parent does not have a portal account, then the parent can see the requests via the Student Portal. Parents can also email their student's 8th grade counselor for access.
- If you made a course request change in the first round of the verification process that is not reflected, it may be one of the following reasons:
- The 1st Round Verification Form was not submitted by the deadline of February 11th.
- The requested courses required completion of prerequisites or did not meet AHS Indicators of Success or Fulton County Schools Course Placement Guidelines. For example, a student cannot select an art class like Ceramics 1, Photo 1, Draw/Paint 1, Fashion Design, etc. without taking VA/Intro to Art (the high school course) class first.
- The completion and/or approval of the requested course is pending, i.e. teacher approval, application, or audition.
If you would like to submit CHANGES to your student’s course requests or add additional courses, please complete the FINAL COURSE REQUEST VERIFICATION Form via the following link (click on link or copy & paste) or use the QR Code, at end of this message, by Friday, May 13th: https://forms.office.com/r/9VMivb7hVW
Helpful Reminders:
- AHS Course Catalog is available on the school’s website, www.fultonschools.org/alpharettahs.
- In the portal under "Next Year Course Request," you will see 4 columns - Course Name, Course Number, Credits, and Type (Ignore the Type Column). Courses are either yearlong or semester courses. Yearlong courses are comprised of 2 semester courses (course numbers end in 1 or 2). In the Campus Portal, semester courses are 0.5 credits. For a complete schedule, the total units of credit for your courses should be 6.0 credits in Campus Portal. Please note that Lunch - 1st semester, Lunch - 2nd semester, and Advisement/Flex SSS will be in your schedule and carry no credit. Students taking courses outside of the regular school day of courses or in the IB diploma program may have additional units. Gifted Participation, starting with 70.23xxxxx is not a course and carries no units of credit. The course number is used to identify students in the TAG Program.
- Please keep in mind that all Fulton Virtual courses (FVS) and all Georgia Virtual courses (GAVS) are taken off campus. Please indicate the period you prefer to be off campus taking your virtual course in that section of the verification form. Providing your own transportation is a requirement, and students may not be on campus during the period of their virtual course. Please note: A Fulton Virtual Course placeholder with the requested period will be seen in course requests not the actual course, i.e., FVS Off Campus - Period 1. Students can take no more than 3 online classes via FVS and GAVS.
- Registration is now open for summer online classes as well as summer school classes. If you are planning to take a course over the summer, make sure to register and get approval from your current 8th grade counselor for the summer course.
Please note the following dropped courses from our Master Schedule due to a lack of student enrollment. If you originally selected one of these courses, you would need to make a request to change the course:
- Latin (all levels)
- Introduction to Drafting & Design
- Advanced Personal Fitness - Yoga
- Introductory Lifetime Sports
- Intermediate Lifetime Sports
- Introductory Team Sports
- Exercise and Weight Control and Advanced Exercise and Weight Control (combined into Weight Training and Advanced Weight Training – all are Weight Training classes just different course titles)
- Music in Movies (Music Appreciation)
Courses that are full and cannot accept new requests:
- Intro to Culinary Arts
For the Weight Training courses offered, please ensure you have requested the correct course using the correct course numbers:
· Weight Training, 36.0540001, semester course, Grades 9-12, offered Semester 1, 7th or 8th period
· Adv Weight Training, 36.0640001, semester course, Prerequisite - Weight Training, semester course, Grades 9 – 12, , offered Semester 2, 7th or 8th period
· Physical Conditioning, 36.0520001, semester course, Freshmen Football players ONLY, offered semester 1, 2nd period
· Advanced Physical Conditioning, 36.0620001, semester course, Freshmen Football players ONLY, offered semester 2, 1st period
Since this is the FINAL course request verification form to be completed for course changes and additions ONLY, I wanted to remind you of this important decision and action item. The course selections you submit on this form will only be changed if there is space available in the requested course. Students who do not have complete schedules and do not submit their course verifications by the deadline will be provided courses selected by their AHS counselors that will be changed if there is space available in the students’ desired course. The window to view and submit your changes for the final course request verification, via this Microsoft form is April 29th - May 13th. Considerations for changes will only be entertained through this process (i.e., no email or phone requests) of completing the Microsoft form.
Selecting the appropriate, balanced schedule for next year, taking into consideration extra-curricular activities, jobs, community service, family obligations and rest, helps your child not only be successful but enjoy high school.
With Raider Pride,
Shannon N. Kersey
