What's New in Ms. Jackson's Class?

The New Year Edition (Jan. 2016)

Welcome to the NEW YEAR!

With a new year comes new and exciting things in our classroom! We are starting a fresh grading period, we have some exciting projects coming up in the new unit, and we have some fresh faces (new students) in our classes! Most exciting of all, each student will be getting CHROMEBOOKS next week! There are alot of things happening and many reasons to be a proud TITAN.

Report Cards are Coming!

Friday January 8th, report cards for the 2nd quarter (9-weeks) will be handed out to students! Be sure to ask your child for theirs! We are half-way through the school year so this will be a good indicator of how well your child is progressing. If grades are not satisfactory and work needs to be done, contact us and lets collaborate to make sure that everyone is on track for SUCCESS!

Students can pick up their Chromebooks at MLCHS on January 12th & 13th from 5-8 pm. A parent or legal guardian must accompany each child. No one is required to stay the entire 3 hours. Please remember that there is a $25 fee for each Chormebook that must be payed that day (it is one of the stations).

Students with last names A-J should come on Tuesday.

Students with last names K-Z should come on Wednesday.

Success Tip of January: Utilize Schoology!

Schoology is the learning management system of Shelby County Public Schools. It is like our digital classroom which we will use everyday once the Chromebooks have been deployed. This website is already up and running for student use. I will use schoology in the following ways:

  1. handouts: lose your paper? Print a copy at home!
  2. quizzes and quiz retakes: not happy with your score? retake it at home!
  3. videos: Miss that clip in class? Watch it at home!
  4. review activities: Still confused on a topic? Get some extra help!
  5. make up work: Get a zero on that assignment? Do it & turn it in NOW! Don't wait for your parent/teacher to give you the work.
  6. bellringers and reflections: forget a notebook, turn it in now & Ms. Jackson will see it in real time!
  7. writting assignments: Many assignments will be collected online now. Type it don't write it!
  8. Absences: Miss school today? Do your work at home and never miss a beat!

What are we learning in Ms. jackson's Class?

We are starting my favorite unit of the year: The Constitution! This is our longest unit of the year and in some aspects the most difficult; however, we are going to do our best to make it the most fun! Over the next 9-week period, we are going to create a functioning government out of the 8th grade class. Expect homework discussions to include details about a presidential election; the writing & passing of laws; and of course a mock supreme court case! Your kids should feel empowered by their experiences taking on the real world roles of our politicians and government officials!

Grading:

Anticipate Parent Portal being full of quiz grades and daily log-entry grades. The biggest grade of the unit will be the DBQ (or document based question). It will be 100 points and essentially is an essay piece that uses primary sources to argue an idea.
