The WAVA Wave
October 1, 2016
Wow, September flew by! It has been a very busy start to the school year and we are now settling in to a great routine. I have been able to visit quite a few classrooms already and have enjoyed listening to students share their learning on the microphone, webcam and even completing work on the whiteboard. I look forward to many more of these opportunities this year!
Fall MAP testing is now complete and I wanted to say thank you for your flexibility, patience and feedback as we assessed approximately 1,000 students! There were some bumps along the way and we have made note of those and will work very hard to make things even better for our winter testing. Thank you again for supporting us with this as we can now use the data to make instructional decisions to better meet the needs of our learners.
I look forward to seeing you in classrooms and at outings throughout the school year, it’s going to be a great year!

COUNSELOR CONNECT
SOCIAL TIME!
An important aspect of being a WAVA student is making friends and interacting socially with other students. WAVA students are invited to participate in two counselor-supervised social opportunities through Class Connect:
Friendship Class!
- Friendship Class is an optional weekly meeting for elementary students. Students are grouped by grade level. The class takes place in Mrs. Martin’s virtual classroom.
- Friendship Class is led by Mrs. Martin, the WAVA Elementary School Counselor. This is Mrs. Martin’s 10th year working for WAVA and 19th year as a school counselor.
- Sample discussion topics for Friendship Class: friendship, personal strengths, problem-solving, study skills and cooperative games.
- Friendship Class begin in November. Days and times are still being determined. These classes are scheduled around required academic classes.
- Please tell your WAVA teacher if you would like to participate or would like more information, or send a message to Mrs. Martin (Janelle Martin) through the OLS.
SOCIAL CLUB
Another great social opportunity for WAVA students in Grades 2-5 is SOCIAL CLUB, occurring every other week on Fridays in Mrs. Martin’s virtual classroom. Our first Elementary SOCIAL CLUB meeting of the year is Friday, October 14 at 2pm. SOCIAL CLUB allows supervised, unstructured time for WAVA students to play games, draw, and interact with other WAVA students. There is no teacher-led discussion during SOCIAL CLUB and participation is optional. Students can join any time during the school year. Please message Mrs. Martin (Janelle Martin) through the OLS if you would like to participate.
I look forward to meeting many of you during the school year!
