Our second grade leaders began the routine of reading the morning announcements this week. Our first announcers had a few words of advice, explaining that announcing is both easy and hard. They shared that the reading is the easy part, but knowing when to read each line is the hard part. Morning announcements are a great way for our students to practice speaking and reading fluently. Each day two students practice their script as a team before leading the announcements. They even get to share a fun fact or joke before they lead the whole school in the Pledge of Allegiance.
This week we held our Hawthorne STARS kickoff assembly. The STARS initiative specifically emphasizes behaviors that are Responsible, Respectful, and Safe in the school environment. Students learned about ways to be Responsible, Respectful and Safe during lunch and recess, in the hallways, bathrooms, and on the bus.
The purpose of the STAR initiative is to encourage children to behave in ways that help them become positive contributors to our school community. By rewarding their efforts, we hope to encourage positive behaviors by emphasizing the importance of contributing to a Responsible, Respectful, and Safe building-wide culture.
When students demonstrate STAR behaviors they earn STARS tickets. STAR totals are recorded on the classroom STAR jars and students are recognized for their personal and class accomplishments with school-wide announcements, certificates and class-selected activities.
Our students have Physical Education every day. Weather permitting, students are also outdoors for recess each day. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately and wearing sneakers.
