A Note From Nurse Griffin
Norovirus: You don’t want it!
The US is seeing a higher-than-average incidence of Norovirus (the stomach bug) circulating right now. Here are some helpful hints to keep you healthy and prevent the spread at school and home. While ECMS has a low case incidence currently, the virus does spread rapidly in crowded settings such as schools.
What is it? Norovirus, often referred to as the stomach flu, is a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness. It is unrelated to influenza or flu virus. Symptoms are categorized as sudden onset nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, and fever (especially in children), which can begin 12-72 hours after exposure. The duration is usually 24-48 hours. Most people recover without complication but some require an ER visit or hospitalization for dehydration.
How is it spread? It is highly contagious and transmissible due to its resistance to many cleaning agents and the low number of virus particles needed to become infected. The viral particles are present in stool and vomit. Transmission can be from direct exposure or from touching contaminated surfaces and not properly cleaning your hands before putting them in your mouth. The virus can be shed by an infected person in the feces for up to two weeks.
How can I prevent it from spreading?
Wash your hands frequently - with soap and water - after touching high-contact surfaces, before eating/drinking, and after using the restroom. Note that alcohol-based hand sanitizers are ineffective against norovirus
Stay home when sick! Remain out of school or work a minimum of 24-48 hours after the last episode of vomiting/diarrhea and be able to tolerate at least a bland diet
Clean high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, phones, counters, tables, etc with a 1:10 ratio bleach solution. Typical commercial sanitizers and disinfectant wipes do not kill Norovirus.
