TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL. 4 NO. 6
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
WEEK ENDING IN 9/17/2021
Dear OSES Family Members,
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Parent Teacher Conference nights this week. If you were unable to attend, and would like to meet with your student’s teacher, please reach out to them directly. These conferences are a great time to discuss specifics about your student’s academic and/or social progress.
Hispanic Heritage week started on September 15th. Unfortunately, we will not have our annual on campus celebration night but will commemorate the period during the school day. Ask your student about the daily trivia contest.
Our COVID confirmed cases number is trending downward (please see data in the newsletter). While the data is declining, we understand that we must continue best practices and keep working hard to keep our students safe while on campus.
A new security measure is in place on campus. The access road that connects Technology Drive to Texas Ave is now closed during peak school hours. The gates to the road will be opened/closed during the following times:
Opens M-F 6:50 a.m.
Closes M-F 9:00 a.m.
Opens M, T, R, F 2:15 p.m.
Opens W 1:15 p.m.
Closed M-F 6:50 p.m.

KINDERGARTEN
This week in Kindergarten learned to be caring about “Caring Camels” as we ventured to to the Middle East to learn about our geography. We also learned about antonyms, synonyms and reviewed nouns.
We had a great time learning measurement with our worms in the morning using cubs thanks to Ms. Bradley’s creative mind and Ms. Krygowski’s crazy parents to bring in some silly worms!!!
FIRST
SECOND
Mrs. Waugh’s Social Studies class just finished up making Salt Dough Maps of Florida and included a key, compass rose, and scale.
For Engineering Wednesdays, students created a bat cave that could hold up a bat upside down from the ceiling for 3 minutes and didn’t touch the ground. They could only use 3 pieces of paper, aluminum foil, pipe cleaners, and tape.
THIRD
Some of our students created Solar ovens during Engineering on Wednesday!
During math class we are working on division and making equal groups!
Some of our students had a great time making their very own treasure maps!
FOURTH
FIFTH
SIXTH
We were out and exercising! The students completed their Fitness Pre-test and planned their own workout.
Now we are dancing! (Group work to create their own line dance)
Changing into PE uniform is optional this year; however, wearing a pair of sneakers is required for PE.
In 6th grade science students are continuing to learn about the scientific method. In Mrs. Aramayo’s class the students had an opportunity to meet with Kristen Dunn, a PHD student at the University of Florida. Ms. Dunn met with us virtually and shared information about her scientific research on fireflies. She explained her research and highlighted how she used the scientific method to answer her question. Fun fact: Fireflies are actually beetles!
Elective-Japanese: We practiced writing names in Katakana using traditional calligraphy brushes and black ink.
SPECIALS
In Character Education this week, we talked about our character trait of the month, which is honesty. We created "Louie" in a cup, a boy who lies, which we then gave "truth juice" to. We watched as the substance in the cup turned the water back to clear with the "truth juice" and discussed how some people will not forgive you right away depending on the lie. For 4th and 5th grade, we also talked about rumors and gossip and how impactful they can be to someone.
In PE this week kindergarten, first grade, and second grade continue to work on their cardio drumming unit. Wednesdays are now back in full swing! Students K-5 enjoy a multitude of physical activities to pick from.

CONTESTS AND CHALLENGES
PIN DESIGN CHALLENG
If you are a fourth to eighth grade student in the United States, your Challenge is to create a digital 3D model of a wearable pin to be 3D printed and distributed to US veterans at the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus, Ohio. Your pin should be original and designed to show appreciation or gratitude for veterans of any U.S. military service branch. To enter, please submit the following entry materials by VETERANS DAY, November 11, 2021!
- STL file of your 3D model (max 20 MB)
- Image of your design (digital image of the 3D model or a photo of a 3D print)
- Text description of your entry (max 150 words)
Your entry will be reviewed by judges including US service members and veterans. The top 10 finalist designs will be 3D printed, glued to pin backs (if necessary), and handed out to veterans who visit the museum. Finalists will also each receive a $100 gift card towards a professional 3D print of their design. The challenge winner will win a 3D printer donated to the school, library, or organization of their choice! Get creative ... and good luck! A Google Form will be in the newsletter starting next week so you can submit your files. For more information, please contact Mrs. Trujillo.
SUM DOG MATH CONTEST
Sumdog's free math contests are a fun way to motivate your students, as they get to compete against other classes, locally or nationally.
Each contest runs from 8am local time on a Friday to 8pm the following Thursday - but you can play at any time during this period.
Scores are based on accuracy, and questions tailored to each student's level - so everyone has a fair chance.
There are virtual rewards for taking part and certificates and prizes for the winners.
All 29 games will be open during the competition. Students are encouraged to log in before next Thursday to complete the diagnostic. They earn coins from that too, so it is helpful in many ways. On Friday of next week, students will compete against other students in Orange County. The competition will last until the 30th. We are so excited for all of the games to be open! We cannot wait to see our students’ names on the leaderboard.
FALL PHYSICAL DESIGN CONTEST
November 1st through December 15th, 2021 – Sponsored by Gamewright, Ravensburger, and Calliope Games
Physical games, whether card, dice, or board, present great opportunities to connect, compete, and learn from others. In the Fall Physical Game Design Competition, students will engage in a hands-on STEM experience with their friends and classmates. The Competition will encourage learning, computational thinking, and fellowship, as well as many other 21st-century skills. This virtual experience will enable K-12 students to learn more about game development and practice critical thinking while expanding their portfolios.
All submissions are due by 11:59 pm PST on December 15th, 2021. More information coming soon!
MATH STORY TELLING CHALLENGE
Families at all of our campuses are welcome to join us on Tuesday, September 21st at 7 PM to learn about Math Storytelling Day. The submissions will be due on September 26th.
Math Storytelling Day encourages everyone to tell stories through math. This is a day to appreciate all the ways math enhances our daily lives. The day is a great opportunity to get children excited about math through stories and games. Math stories can include logic, patterns, puzzles and numbers, tell math jokes, and sing songs about math.
K-12 students are encouraged to tell stories through math and submit their story to the challenge. There will be a special celebration for their math stories in late September or early October on Zoom. Families may log in on the 21st to learn more about Math Storytelling Day and how to participate.
The goal of these challenge is:
- Celebrate Math Storytelling Day
- Increase math scores
- Build confidence and joy during math exploration
