A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: This week's mentor text was Saturdays and Teacakes by Lester Lominack. In addition to AMAZING painted illustrations, this book includes incredibly detailed sentences that help us visualize exactly what is happening in the story. Here is an example: "In Mammaw's big kitchen, sunlight poured through the windows like a waterfall and spilled over the countertops, pooling up on the checkerboard floor." Our focus was on identifying proper nouns, common nouns and adjectives. The students had a great time coming up with imitation sentences to practice using the same sentence structures as the author.
Content: Mindset...Fixed or Growth? This week we talked about accepting feedback, both compliments and criticisms. This is hard...for all of us! We discussed how we can respond to people when they give us feedback. A simple smile and "Thank You" often works, even if it is something negative!
Reader's Workshop: We completed Please Write in this Book by Mary Amato! The students created a book titled B.U.I.L.D. Community.
B: Building Conflict-students identified the conflict in the story and the causes.
U: Underlying Problem-there are a LOT of problems with the kids in this story!
I: Identify the Solution-Yay! There WAS a solution to the problems!
L: Learn from Each Other-an important lesson which leads to...
D: Develop TEAMWORK!!!
Next week we will begin work on our first Reading benchmark and will look at identifying the differences between stories, dramas, and poems.

REMINDERS & REQUESTS:
- PROJECT GO will be on October 10th. Students are asked to bring an "old favorite" t-shirt to school for this project. They will be turning it into a pillow with the help of our Project Go sewing experts (NOT Mrs. Loppnow!), and the grandparents who are able to join us. Please do not send adult-sized shirts!
- During PROJECT GO, we offer snacks for our Grandparent volunteers. I am looking for (food) volunteers who would be willing to send in the following on October 10th: Carafes of coffee (one caffeinated, one de-caff), Meat and cheese plate, crackers . Please let me know if you are able to help out. THANKS!
- CODING!!! For the second year, we are bringing CODING to our 3rd graders!! I am looking for a parent volunteer (or two) who would be willing to be trained by a professor from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His training is quick and easy! The time commitment for working with the students would be 1-2 times per week for 1/2 an hour to an hour (your choice!) . We can be a bit flexible with the dates and times. Let me know if you are interested in learning more!
- I really am trying to encourage healthy snacks during our snack time. Please save chips and cookies for lunch or after school.
- Although we do not celebrate birthdays in the classroom, students may choose to donate a book to our classroom or share non-treat items such as pencils.
- If your child has a change of plans for after school, please let me know via email ASAP.
- In addition, if your child is riding a friend's bus home, he/she MUST have a handwritten note to be allowed on that bus.
