Erin's Law: Personal Safety
Dear Families,
Erin’s Law was passed in August of 2019 and requires schools to teach child sexual abuse prevention and exploitation prevention to students in grades K-8. Erin’s Law is intended to provide awareness, assistance, and resource information to children and families who may be victims of abuse or maltreatment. It is also intended to help teachers and parents recognize warning signs and report them to the appropriate school staff/authorities.
The guidance staff at Brookside has begun class lessons around this topic. Each grade level has several age-appropriate objectives that will be covered. These lessons are meant to be informative and preventative. They will help students learn personal boundaries and identify their trusted adult(s). Following their lesson, materials will be sent home so that parents can follow up with conversations at home. More information can be found about Erin’s law at https://www.erinslaw.org/.
If you have any specific concerns or questions, please contact Anita Barry, School Social Worker or Randy Curth, School Counselor at Brookside, 669-4105.
CUBS Character Education
Next, we will be learning about Cooperation on March 3rd. Please wear your blue & gold Saber spirit wear that day!
Oakdale Mall Performance: Chorus & 5th Grade Band - 3/16/23
⭐When: Thursday, March 16th (12:15-12:45pm)
Buses will pick up students @ 11:30am from Brookside and return to school no later than 1:20 pm.
⭐Where: Chorus and 5th Grade Band will be performing at the center court of the mall. Use the west entrance by the Oakdale Pizza.
Each group will take turns performing. We will begin with the 5th grade band @12:15pm and the chorus will perform after. All are welcome to come and watch. We suggest if you’d like to see the entire performance to arrive by 12:10pm. After the performance, all students will return to Brookside. They are not allowed to leave from the event.
⭐What to Wear: Concert attire will be nice black shoes or sneakers, solid black tops (short or long) and black pants or leggings. No skirts or dresses since many of the students will be sitting down on the floor at times. If you need to borrow concert clothing, please feel free to call us here at school.
⭐When we return to Brookside, we will be having a pizza party for the students’ lunch and to celebrate. Along with the pizza, they will have a drink, chips and dessert. In order to have this happen, we are asking each student to please bring in $5 cash in an envelope with their name clearly written on it. ⭐If you are unable to donate the $5, please let us know.
⭐Please be sure you have returned the permission slip in order for your child to attend this event and ride the bus. Return both your $5 cash and bus slip together to either Mrs. Dyson or Mr. Johnson.
⭐We are unable to reschedule this concert at the mall if we have a snow day on March 16th; however, we will still plan on having the pizza party during their lunch block the next day.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at: kdyson@svsabers.org or rjohnson@svabers.org. Thank you for your help and support and we look forward to seeing you on March 16th!

1st Grade
2nd Grade
We have been reading, writing and learning about important people who have fought for important causes in history. We have built our reading stamina greatly, and are moving into longer and more challenging books. In writing we are working on opinion pieces. Second graders are learning to form opinions and support them with reasons.
In math, we are tackling addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students are showing great determination solving these challenging math problems. Soon, we are beginning work with length, money, and data in math.
We enjoyed making homemade ice cream with Ag in the Classroom. It has been an eventful winter. We are excited for all of the learning and fun to come in the spring!

3rd Grade
In the weeks ahead, we are working on our new ELA (English Language Arts) unit on frogs and we will be studying many different types of frogs, their habitats, behaviors, adaptations, and then will end with the students choosing their own frog to research and share with classmates. As we get closer to the NYS Assessments, we will be preparing more and more. We are teaching them many strategies to read closely and mark up text, as well as for math we are teaching them to read problems carefully, draw a picture to show work, and then write an answer statement. Wishing you a warm rest of winter and hoping for a happy spring!!
4th Grade
Happy Winter! In 4th grade, we are working hard and having fun! We enjoyed our field trip on February 23rd to the Roberson Museum to review all we have learned about Native Americans in New York State. We made pinch pots, visited the Haudenosaunee exhibit, and went to the planetarium. We received many compliments about our students' excellent behavior, and the presenters at Roberson were wonderful.
Also, we try to go outside as much as possible. So, please do not forget to have your child bring in a coat daily. The yellow take home folders are also a great way to communicate with us here at school. Please check them daily for the happenings here at Brookside.
In math we have finished up our Geometry unit and are moving on to one of our largest units of study, fractions. Please talk with your child about fractions at home and how you use them and see them in the world. Also, feel free to practice math facts as this will help your child greatly here at school.
In Social Studies we are finishing the French and Indian War and are moving on to the American Revolution and how it impacted New York and its future development. We will dive into Science at the beginning of March and study renewable and non renewable forms of energy.
In ELA we have been learning about Colonial America. We have been reading about colonial life and now we are focusing on the trades or jobs they had during Colonial Times. In Writing we are Focusing on Informational Writing focusing on New York State.
5th Grade
February has been an exciting month for 5th grade! We have been working hard in our core classes; reading about athletes that broke barriers, living in fraction land for math, learning about the Columbian Exchange, and also exploring the planets; we even got to visit the portable planetarium.
We also had the chance to work with our 2nd grade buddy classes and created posters on how to be a good friend.
As we approach March, the fifth graders will be participating in a fluency competition against each other. We will be crowning champions within each homeroom, an overall 5th grade champion, as well as a class champion. The students have been working very hard on their multiplication facts all year, now they will be able to put that practice to work in the competition.
New York State Testing!
- ELA Testing starts on April 19th
- Math Testing starts on May 2nd
Be sure you have these dates marked on your calendar so that students are in attendance at school, well-rested, and eat breakfast!
