IPC - Chocolate
Students had a busy week this week researching fair trade and understanding how all stakeholders in the chocolate making process are better off.
Next week, we will be looking at chocolate from a sustainability perspective. The students will choose a sustainability cause to support through the sale of their own chocolate creations. We will also begin to look at the science behind chocolate by examining it's melting point in the science lab.
We will be looking for some parents to help out in week 8 (23rd-27th of May) with chocolate making at the school. Class teachers will provide further details and times.
Please remember to hand in the permission notes for our upcoming chocolate excursion to the chocolatier. These are due by Monday 16th May. Please note, Grade 2J do not require any parental help on this excursion.
Chloe and Sebastian use the iPads find out information about Fairtrade.
Optional Homework Task

Optional Homework Task
Students started their new Writer’s Workshop topic on ‘Information Texts’ or another way to describe them ‘All About’ books. These are non-fiction books that teach the reader ‘all about’ a particular topic. As part of this unit on 'All About' Books (informational writing), the students have been immersing in non-fiction texts during their reading time. In particular, how authors organise their information. This will help the students with their end goal of understanding paragraphs. When reading with your child, please pay close attention to contents pages and how information is grouped. During their immersion into reading ‘All About’ books students have noticed all the different features that these types of books contain such as: contents page, glossary, index, headings, photographs, diagrams, captions, labels etc. This is part of the current reading CAFÉ strategy from the comprehension element of CAFE ‘Using Text Features. Identify some organisational features and explain how they help readers understand text. Students also noticed some language features of this type of writing; that these texts are all written in the present tense and third person.
In Spelling this week students learned about homophones, words that sound the same but are spelled different and mean different things. Next week the students’ spelling focus will be how to add –er an –est to words. .
Maths - Multiplication and Division
In Maths this week, we completed our unit on "Multiplication and Division."
We now know that multiply is just like repeated addition and also means groups of. We also now know that divide means to share equally. This week we practised being able to read and understand the language of a word problem and work out whether we should multiply or divide.
At the end of this week, we started to learn our 2 times table. We practised counting in 2s (forwards and backwards!) and sung along to Percy Parker to help us remember the number facts. All children have been given a laminated card, showing the 2 times table. This can be taken home to help practise and learn the 2 times table.
Over the next few weeks, the children will learn the multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. We will begin with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will sing songs, learn rhymes and play games to learn them and will give each child a copy of the tables that they will be working on. We will begin "Times Tables Tests" to test the children on their knowledge of these tables.
The first times table test will be on Friday 20th May. This test will consist of 20 questions, all about the 2, 5 and 10 times table.
