Principal's Korero

Tēnā koutou kātoa,

I hope that you are all well and coping with the changeable weather that we keep having. Our thoughts are with whānau, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle and who are now managing the next lot of wet weather that is moving through these regions again.

Our students have started their full learning programme this week with students making adjustments to moving classes for different subjects as well as getting to know different teachers. Most are adjusting to this change and others are feeling a bit unsettled. It will take a little while for them to adjust but they will be fine.

Communication between school and whānau is essential for our holistic growth of all of our students. I would like to thank our teachers, support staff and whānau who have been in contact for a range of reasons as our students can see we are all working together for their progress.

Extra-Curricular

Our extra-curricular activities have been offered over the past few weeks as we get further into the school year. These include Kapa Haka, Siva, Singing Group, Sports responsibilities, Guitar/Ukulele etc. We have had a large turnout for all of these groups.

Commitment is a focus for us this year with students given a 2 - 3 week window to see if their chosen extra-curricular activity is for them. If they find in those 2 - 3 weeks that it is not for them they have the opportunity to withdraw from that activity. After this, they will be expected to be committed, be punctual, take responsibility for learning in between classes and fully participate. Most of these groups perform at our end-of-term Trophy Nights and they will be expected to attend and perform at these events. As these extra-curricular opportunities are held during learning time, students are expected to catch up on learning that they have missed. At the beginning of each term, students can opt to join an extra-curricular activity if they want to. This ensures that the opportunities are there for everyone throughout the year.

Whānau B.B.Q -

Fingers crossed third time lucky that we can hold our Whānau B.B.Q next Thursday 2nd March. If the weather is not in our favour we will have to cancel this event and try again in 2024.

Paid Union Meeting

Our teachers will be attending a Paid Union Meeting next Tuesday 28th February from 2.00 - 3.00 p.m. While our teachers attend this meeting our non-union members, our teacher aides and I will be supervising our students. This means it is school as usual with the normal finish time of 3.00 p.m.

Te Ara Kōrero

In a few weeks, we will be holding our Term 1Te Ara Kōrero (Whānau conferences). This is a time when whānau can come in and meet with their child's teacher and share information about their child's learning. Teachers will be able to share with you the results from assessments and observations and where your child is achieving at. It is also a time for you to share information about your young person with us and how we can work together to support them on their learning journey.

Keep an eye out for the link to make a booking online or if you want to you can come into the office and our team can make a booking for you. We are in the process of setting up the online booking system and will send out the information shortly.

Big Day Out

I have managed to confirm a booking with the Hutt City Council for Williams Park for next Friday 3rd March 2023. I am just waiting on confirmation for the booking of the buses for this date and hopefully, the weather will be nice to us and let us take our school for a wonderful day out.

Saturday Netball

We are in the final stages of netball trials for students who are keen to play Saturday netball at Mungavin Courts. Emily Farrer is leading netball this year with my support. Confirmation of teams will be listed next week with information coming out to whānau regarding commitment agreements and the fees for the year.

School Lunches Survey

Kapura have sent out a survey that each class will get to fill out online. This survey is looking at menu options for Term 2 which Kapura will consider as they gather feedback from all of the schools they provide healthy lunches to.

Big picture

School Lunches

We have had a few weeks of Healthy lunches in schools and have seen quite a few lunches being thrown in trash bins and in the bushes after school. Our teachers have been monitoring who is eating the lunches and who is taking food home. We know that it is important for all children to have a good meal during the school day but with all the wasted kai we have seen over the last few days we ask that if your child no longer wants to receive the school-provided healthy lunches please opt out by emailing or calling the office.

Sports

Sports Expectations

We are proud to have many sporting opportunities at Titahi Bay Intermediate and in 2022 we were lucky to have more events being held in the Wellington region. This year our goal is to encourage more students who are both experienced and inexperienced in sports to give it a go!

Below is the procedure for sport at TBI:

1. A note will be put into our internal notices for students to sign up for a particular sport/event (this encourages individual responsibility for students). For whānau to keep up to date with sporting events please check the What’s On at the bottom of the Newsletter.

2. When a team is named we will send home a permission slip informing whānau of the event and specific details. Additional information will be sent by email.

3. One the day of the event students must wear their full school uniform to school including any equipment that would be helpful during the day such as:

a. Appropriate shoes

b. Water bottle

c. Rain jacket

4. Please note that students will not be allowed to leave to get lunch at any shops throughout the day (this is a school wide rule).

5. If an event runs after 3:00pm we will utilise our Facebook group to update whānau on when

students should be arriving back at school.

Please note, if your tamariki is participating in any external school sport we would love to know about it and celebrate it within our school and post it in the newsletter.

If you have any particular interests or skills in the sporting realm that you can offer to our school please let us know by calling the office on (04) 236 8588 or emailing Emily Farrer on

emilyf@bayintermediate.school.nz . We appreciate any help that can be offered.

Netball

We have started trials for Netball this year as we have a tournament coming up later this term. Thank you to those people who have put their names forward for coaching, managing, or umpiring, we will be in contact soon to gauge what you would like to help with. If you would like to get involved in Netball at TBI in any way please call the office at (04) 236 8588 or email Emily Farrer at emilyf@bayintermediate.school.nz.

Teacher's Corner

This week marked the start of our curriculum rotations. Technology is always a favourite subject for our students and this term they will be making cushions in Soft Materials.

In this unit students will be learning many skills, such as the importance of choosing the right material for the job, measuring and managing self. They will understand that when we make a product, we choose materials based on their properties and these can determine what the product looks like and what it does.

So far the cushion designs are looking great, the students are on task and we are very excited to see some stunning cushions in a few weeks time!

-Ms Cole (Assistant Principal)

School App

We encourage all parents to sign up for the School App. The instructions are below. We use the School App to communicate notices or changes in events that might need to get out to parents quickly.
