Shug
Book By: Jenny Han Presentation By: Emily Harrison
Characterization
He eyes me suspiciously. "Why, who do you have?"
"Jack Connelly."
Shaking his head, he says, "Uh-uh. No way." (This shows that Annmarie and Jack are enemies, and she dreads being with him.)
"I'm not being contrary! I told you I din't want to go! Your the one who won't listen! You never listen!" This comes out louder than I intended. (This shows that Shug is really stressing about everyone being in a relationship and going to the dance.)
"Fine!" I burst out. The words erupt out of me like hot fizzy soda spilling all over the place. Hugh's all you ever talk about! You used to be interesting! Now you're so wrapped up in your little 'relationship' you can't even think about anyone else." (This shows that Shug isn't confident in herself, and that she is afraid of loseing her friend.)
Theme
Mark has been best friends with Shug all his life, yet he doesn't realize Shug likes him.
Shug is enemies with Jack, but doesn't realize he likes her.
Figurative Language
"All the other mothers smile and pretend to like Mrs. Tallini, but really they think she is attractive in a used up, tanning bed kind of way." (It is a metaphor and shows that the neighborhood is very judgmental and word spreads fast.)
"You know the kind of eyes that always look like they are smiling?" (It is personification and shows that Shug notices the guy she is talking about.)
