Grass Valley Data Update - How are we doing?
The Instructional Core
We have been focus on RL.2 and RL.3:
- CCRA.RL.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
CCRA.RL.3 Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.
So far we are seeing growth!
- RL.2: Grew from 2% (Pre) to 23.3% (Post)
- RL.3: Grew from 3.4% (Pre) to 22.75% (Post)
Let's continue to focus our work and support our students with access to the Instructional Core!

Nuts & Bolts
- Emergency Drills, Halloween Be sure to review the email sent last week with more information regarding each of these and to follow up with any questions or needs!
- Yard Duty Be sure to arrive on time to your scheduled yard duty. It is your legal responsibility to supervise students when you are scheduled.
- COST Referral Forms Please use the link at the end of the WAG to submit student referrals for students who have additional needs. We want to assure that no students are missed.
Notification When Absent
- Any personal days require notification, in writing, in advance of the requested time off.
- If you determine you need to take a sick day, I ask, as a professional courtesy, that you text (804-922-7728) and/or email ASAP...even if it is 5 in the morning! Our goal is to limit the need to split classes this year, but in order to do so, we need advanced notice about absences in order to do our best to find coverage.
STIP Calendar This Google Calendar will reflect Alexa's Schedule. If you'd like to schedule time with her, please reach out to Casey.
Instruction & Assessments
Assessments
Grades 3-5: FOSSMap
Details are in a separate email. Should be completed by November 1!
Grades K-2: Data Conferences
Soraya and I will be conducting Data Conferences with you this week. These will be an opportunity to review the recent assessments she has been giving students and to begin the process of SIPPS groupings.
Instruction
Our current focus is on complex texts. We have been vertically aligning strategies to support with assuring our students are able to access these texts during PLC and will continue that work this week. We know that exposure to grade level content through complex texts is critical for ALL students and a requirement of our teaching practice. I look forward to seeing our work in action!
Functions of Behavior & Pre-Referral Interventions

Functions of Behavior & Pre-Referral Interventions
As you are addressing student behavior using the URF, be sure that you are considering why the behavior is occurring (function of behavior) in order to determine which pre-referral intervention would best support the student.
- Be Safe
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
We are a PBIS school. All staff are expected to use the Grass Valley Way with students. Be sure that you are communicating in a preventative manner, and not a reactionary one, including using an appropriate tone of voice with all students.
Behavior Flow Chart for Referrals Staff members who send a student to the office should do so based on the normed behavior flow chart. All students sent to the office should be sent with a URF.
Universal Referral Forms For any student sent to the office, we should receive a URF. This is how we will communicate with families about the incident and track data on students' needs.
Pre-Referral Intervention Guide This guide shares information and examples about each of the pre-intervention techniques listed on the URF.
Appreciations!
Thanks to all of our staff who were present at KDA for planning today and for your continued flexibility with the power situation!
Thanks to Kathy and Keith for meeting students who accidentally came to school:)
