A Message From Becca Harkleroad, RN LTISD Lead Nurse
Dear Lake Travis ISD Parents, Guardians:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu activity is widespread in most of the United States. Many schools in Texas have reported higher than usual absences due to student and staff illness. While Lake Travis ISD officials cannot confirm that student and staff absences are due to the flu, our schools have reported modest increases in student and staff illness.
Please be reminded, if your child is sick with a fever (99.5 F or higher), do not send him/her to school. Keep your sick child home for at least 24 hours after the fever has subsided. Your child may return to school after his/her temperature returns to normal for 24 hours without medication.
Our goal is to decrease the exposure to the flu while limiting the disruption to learning. As such, we would like to inform you of the steps we continue to take to prevent the transmission of the flu among our students and staff.
At school:
Campus nurses continue to assess and monitor student and staff illness; student and staff who are ill will be sent home.
Staff is reviewing proper hand-washing techniques and cough etiquette for students.
Teachers are having students wash their hands throughout the day as needed.
Custodial staff are cleaning district-wide facilities and classrooms daily and as needed including commonly-touched surfaces and areas such as windows, whiteboards, desks, tables, chairs, doorknobs, café table tops and seats, water fountains, sinks/faucets and locker rooms.
Custodial staff will perform personal rug sanitation procedures with hospital-grade disinfectant every Tuesday and Thursday at each elementary school.
Transportation staff are disinfecting seats on all buses after each run (morning and afternoon).
At home, we recommend families consider taking the following preventative actions:
Teach your children to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based rub.
Remind family members to use tissues to cover the mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze. Throw away the tissue after use. If a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your sleeve or elbow.
Use paper towels to dry hands or assign each family member his/her own hand-drying towel.
Teach your children not to share personal items, such as drinks, food, or unwashed utensils.
Know the signs and symptoms of the flu and how it is spread. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, and cough. Many people also have a runny nose, fatigue, body aches, loss of appetite, nausea and/or diarrhea. Please keep your child home if he/she is experiencing any of these symptoms.
Talk to your health care provider about the flu vaccine.
For more information about the flu, visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/flu. You may also contact your child’s school nurse directly.
Sincerely,
Becca Harkleroad, RN
LTISD Lead Nurse

Our clinic needs new or gently used leggings, shorts, and pants
Nurse Shotwell, as the keeper of the wardrobe, has reported a need for small, medium and large girls' leggings. He also needs, for boys and/or girls, small, medium, and large athletic shorts and pants.
We would appreciate your keeping Nurse Shotwell's needs in mind if you have gently used clothing that your children no longer need. Many thanks!

ABOUT THE SHOW:
The Talent Show is POPULAR at LWE. We encourage participation as an opportunity to build confidence and celebrate our students as a community.
Consider diverse ideas to showcase, such as: Group Acting, Singing (no lip-syncing), Storytelling/poetry, Cultural/Interpretive dance, Comedy routines, Hula Hooping, Soccer tricks, Karate, Gymnastics, or Jump Roping.
Auditions will be held February 22 at LWE. Please come with a polished, final-form of the act including all participants. Every act who comes prepared will be allowed in the show. Each act will receive verbal and written critique to help prepare the act for the final performance. This year, auditions will be held in a classroom.
Dress Rehearsal for the Showcase is March 7, 2019 with the Show the following night, March 8, 2019. The Dress Rehearsal and Show will be on the Gym Stage.
A Parent or Chaperone must accompany all participants to auditions and dress rehearsal.
Parents are asked to sign up (on Shutterfly) for one volunteer opportunity because this is a BIG job!
Parent Volunteers Needed
Lakeway Morning 1/2 Marathon Run Club to start soon! Coach Judson and Coach Spano will be out on the track on Tues. and Weds. mornings starting in a couple of weeks from 7:20 - 7:40 encouraging students to come out and run the track before school. We will be keeping track of their laps and for every mile they run they will earn a shoelace charm. The goal will be to complete a 1/2 marathon before the end of the school year. We are anticipating a good turn out and will need some parent volunteers to help us with recording laps. If you are available to help us out the first few weeks please email Coach Judson, judsonm@ltisdschools.org and let her know.
Thank you Mustang family!

Welcoming Mr. Lester Wolff
West Cypress welcomes Mr. Lester Wolff coming aboard to serve as the interim principal.
Mr. Wolff was born in San Pedro, CA, and was raised in the Midwest. He moved to Texas in 1985 to try his hand in golf business before starting his career in education. He began his education career as an elementary school teacher in the Arlington ISD. While still with the Arlington ISD, he served as an Elementary Assistant Principal for 3 years, and Elementary Principal for 7 years, and the Director of Personnel for 4 years.
Moving closer to our neighborhood, Mr. Wolff served as the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in the Eanes ISD for 9 years.
Although he retired in 2016, the Lake Travis ISD is fortunate to have him serving as an Interim Administrator/Substitute for the past 2 years.
Mr. Wolff has been married to his lovely wife, Jennifer, almost 32 years. Mr. Wolff and his wife have a son and a daughter. He enjoys traveling, golf, bowling, watching sports--especially Nebraska Cornhusker football! And, now, he is also enjoying getting to know our Tigers and their families.
