Fall issue 2022
News you can use... for parents and caregivers of talented, high-ability and gifted students.
Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year from the Gifted & Talented Division!
We hope the scholars in your care are back in the groove -- going to bed early and up in time for breakfast without too much fuss!
Our teachers are all-in for another year of providing extended learning and enrichment to meet the needs of our gifted and talented students. In addition to time spent supporting teachers and students, we know that Academic Options (clubs and extra-curriculars) offer valuable opportunities for students to explore topics, skills and activities of interest to them. These programs build thinking skills, independence and effective communication. Our department will continue to sponsor inter-district competitions in Chess, Middle School Debate, Math Showcase and Invention Convention. Look for information from your school regarding how your child can participate.
The availability of these enrichment opportunities varies by school. Please contact the Gifted Specialist in your building for information. Click here for Gifted Specialists listed by school: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HDh3q0KWwYSqEnNIyoiXsjNkIOhMl92PaAsHGVJMM68/edit#gid=0

Curriculum Corner - What's New?
- thinkLaw is a vehicle some of our teachers are using to build critical thinking for all students, not just the highest achieving ones. Rote memorization and spoon-fed learning will not prepare young people for the rapidly changing workforce that awaits them. thinkLaw uses real-life legal cases in upper grades and fairy tales and nursery rhymes in lower grades as a hook to unleash the critical thinking potential of all students. Professional development helps educators apply rigorous inquiry strategies that help them transform from asking “what” and “how to” to “why?” and “what if? questions. Stay tuned for information on using critical thinking strategies at home.
High School and College Level Course Options for Gifted & Advanced Learners
- Advanced Placement (AP) courses allow students to work on university coursework in a supportive high school environment. Interested CCS students are eligible and fees are paid by the district. College credit is not guaranteed and requires a score of 3, 4, or 5 (depending on the university). Availability of AP courses varies by high school.
- International Baccalaureate (IB) is a collection of advanced courses taken at the high school level. IB courses are designed to emulate college courses based on international standards. International Baccalaureate classes are available at CAHS.
- College Credit Plus (CCP) opens the catalog of university courses to students who meet entrance requirements, as early as 7th grade. Visit the Higher Ed Partnerships web site for more information. (Link below)
