Newsletter Week 9 Term 3
St Joseph's School Waipukurau 21st September 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
‘Iti te matakahi, pangāia ki te tōtara pakaru ai’
The wedge may be small but it will split the greatest tōtara.
‘If you are faithful in the little things, you will be faithful in large ones’.
Luke 16:10
Kia Ora i te whānau kātoa,
The relationship between this weeks whakatauki and our gospel reading demonstrates for us the great impact and influences small actions can have on people, us as a school community and society. Something as small as a wedge can have a great impact. Principal Mr. R Vanderply shares the analogy of ‘When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small ruder wherever the pilot wants to go. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts’.
Over the past few weeks our students have been preparing and researching original subject matter in order to deliver a speech that gains attention, is grammatically sound and rich in vocabulary. They use their voice, tone, clarity and volume to inspire or have an effect on the audience. This 3 minutes is a small part of what ignites in them the confidence and sense of achievement that opens many more oral language opportunities for them in the future. - ‘the great are humbled’ and the humbled are honoured’.

Leading in Faith, Learning for Life
Every student has a strategy they use to remember information more efficiently. Some take notes: some make diagrams: some prefer to listen: and some like to follow instructions and create. Since no learning style fits all students, we, as a teaching team aim to provide opportunities for our students to show what they know and can do by trying to understand how each of our learners learns best.
Recently, Mrs. Hutchinson guided some students through a design project that had them successfully: research, design, create, modify and present very impressive Robots, while other students used their math deciphering skills to complete and create their own orienteering course for others to decode and enjoy. When learning fills their body with smiles and laughter, learning is definitely remembered.
‘We must teach more by example than by word’. ST. Mary MacKillop
Thank you to Ella Jackson and Isla Malcolm who continues to step up each week and collate our PFG Pie orders.
Thank you to our school leaders: Molly and Hannah for continuing to walk in the footsteps of Jesus in the respectful manner they model exemplary leadership.
Thank you to Kelly for modeling for our students how to care and be proud of our school.
Keep safe this long weekend, see you all back at school on Tuesday 27th September for a super exciting, busy last week of term.

PFG Update (St Joseph's Parents and Friends Fundrasing Group)
Hello!
Friday - PIE day
Pie lunches again this week.
Our next meeting is this coming Monday 26th September - we are still holding it even though it is a public holiday. Room 2 at the school 7pm - please come along and find out more about us!!
We are not far off begging, we need more helping hands or we will have stop the PFG, which means less for the students and school.
Ever wondered who we are or what exactly do we do? Do you want to be involved in the school but not sure how? Are you able to do a meeting once a month? Either in person or via zoom.
Our primary goals this year is putting $300 into each classroom and as much away as we can into our second account for the refurbishment of the playground. We then carry enough in our current account to pre pay for fundraiser items.
This year already we have funded every classroom with their wants/nice to have/much needed teaching resources.
We are in desperate need of new people to help us. We need a minimum amount of people to continue the work we do fundraising to put the extras, the nice to haves or the much needed into the school for our kids.
We need your stunning and helpful personality. You don't have to be full of great idea's - just willing to help build on them, nor do you need to be available for every fundraiser - just as long as we can share the load. You don't need a special skill set, just be you and use your own unique skills. There's many areas of fundraising that will suit people - planning, organizing, doing, fun, friendship and making a difference.
Please make contact to find out more about us and we are sure you will catch the vibe and want to jump on board to make a difference to our children and school.
We really hope to build this committee and this community together.
