Successful Community Service Day
An important component of our school's mission is to serve our local and global communities. Thank you to all the students, family members, staff, and community partners that made our 11th Annual Community Service Day a success.
Here's a look at the numbers:
1520+ service hours completed by 463 middle school students serving our local community covering 280 square miles at 20 service sites. This included 18 field trip groups on 10 buses, supervised by 53 parent volunteers and 24 teachers. Our families generously donated personal hygiene supplies filling 8 boxes that students carried with them to Transition Project and Northwest Children's Outreach.
This year's activities included several projects designed and led by middle schoolers, as well as supply drives. A field day at Imagine Possibilities was planned by 7th Graders Brooklyn Cessna, Amanda Phu, and Katelyn Stellingwerf. 8th Graders Grace Heassler, Ella Metcalf, and Michelle Wang planned the service project and supply drive for Northwest Children's Outreach. Special thanks to Middle School Counselor Alicia Johnson and parent Sarah Rios Lopez for their role as coordinators!

Dress Code Reminder
We've had a few sunny days that hold the promise of warmer weather ahead. Now is a great time to review ISB's dress code expectations with your child(ren):
Students are reminded that their work at ISB is occurring in a school and work environment. Therefore, the school setting, modesty, and safety should be considered in decisions regarding dress and grooming. Students’ individualism and expression of personal tastes through dress will be allowed and supported in our school setting as long as those choices adhere to the following guidelines.
Head:
No bandanas. No caps with any inappropriate comments, slogans, letters, or logos; references to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sexual behavior or orientation, gangs, or violence. Masks are not allowed.
Upper Garments:
All tops must cover the midriff area and torso. Students should be able to raise their hand without exposing their midriff. Tops that leave the shoulder mostly bare are inappropriate. Sheer clothing is inappropriate. No shirts with any inappropriate comments, slogans, letters, or logos; references to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sexual behavior or orientation, gangs, or violence.
Lower Garments:
The length of shorts, skirts, and dresses (including athletic shorts worn outside of PE) much reach at least the end of the thumb when arms are relaxed at sides. No undergarments should show, even while seated.
Dress and grooming are primarily the responsibility of students and their parents. These guidelines allow students to choose a manner of dress and grooming that suits and expresses their personal tastes. If student dress is outside of the above expectations students will be asked to address the issue. Students who are able to address the issue will not receive a consequence nor have an incident on their record. However, repeated dress code violations or refusal to address the concern will lead to parent contact and/or disciplinary action. We appreciate in advance the cooperation of students and their families in following these clothing guidelines.

Three ISB 11th graders have been awarded a scholarship to study in Korea this summer through The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y). The US Department of State awards merit-based scholarships to high school students for participation in summer and academic year immersion programs, immersing participants in the cultural life of the host country, giving them formal and informal language practice, and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures. Congratulations to Chris Carlson, Zach Ramsey, and James Taylor! More information about the NSLI-Y program can be found here.
Congratulations to juniors Susheel Ravi and Adam Shinomiya and seniors Shawn Li and Shun Wetlesen, who participated in the 2nd Annual Pacific Northwest Japan Bowl on Saturday, March 10th at the Native American Student Center at Portland State University. The competition mixed language questions with culture and general knowledge about Japan. Students answered 50 questions in the morning, with the top three teams going through a fast-paced quiz show competition in the afternoon. A total of 33 students competed, representing 8 high schools from the Portland metropolitan area. ISB's junior team placed third and the senior team received an honorary mention.
