He was a French Statesmen and the 45th Prime Minister of France. He was a moderate Republican and a Roman Catholic.
He opposed the war with Prussia, and took the patriotic line and accepted that the war was forced on France.
After the French defeat in Orleans, his seat was given to someone else.
He also was the one who surrendered to Germany.
