Chancellor News and Notes
September 11-15, 2017
Back to School (Again)!
We have been through a lot over the past few weeks, and getting back to normalcy is a huge part of helping everyone heal and make peace with any upheavals that may have occurred in their lives during this time. Please be patient and gracious in working with any stress-related behavior students may exhibit, and please alert the counselors if you think a student may need a deeper conversation regarding any home situations.
As we welcome our students back to school, please take the time to reset your community in your classroom, and provide opportunities to share about storm experiences. Find out who has damages, who may have lost possessions or been temporarily displaced due to flooding or damage, and share that information with our counseling team. There are many resources available for our families, including clothing, food, homeless displacement services, and counseling.
We are aware there have been several staff members who have incurred damages as well, and may be in need. Please feel free to come talk to an administrator to address any needs, as there are resources available from other staff members, the district, and the surrounding Houston community that may be able to fulfill any needs. Mrs. Barr is also available for counseling services as needed, so please feel free to let her know if there is a need there, with staff or students.
One of our staff members, our principal Lisa Saarie, is working to get her house back in order this week from her flooding damage. She sends a big thank you to everyone who has checked in with her over the last couple of weeks as she has worked on demolition and reconstruction of her home.
Bus SMART Tags: Starting Thursday! Please read carefully:
Bus Tags: we are starting on Thursday with bus tags.
- We have received tags for new students, which are being placed in holders to distribute to teachers, hopefully tomorrow.
- You will need to get out the tags in the cum folders of students who had them last year.
- By the end of the day tomorrow, please send a grade-level list of any students who do not have a bus tag, with homeroom teacher listed. Send these lists directly to me (Tessia) and I will print out. We will work to get these tags made as quickly as possible.
- Thursday morning we will have two meetings, at 8:10, and at 8:30, in the gym with bus students. I will send out a schedule on Wednesday for when bus numbers should come down. We will have two meetings to talk to half at a time, since there are so many students.
- On Thursday, all students should have bus tags attached to their backpacks or clipped on. We hope to have everyone with the clear attachment for backpacks (like kindergarten bus students have attached on theirs for red/green tags) but we may not have enough. The clips from last year will be sufficient until we can get more in.
Fire Drill on Thursday, September 21st
The first fire drill of the year will be next Thursday.
Please review all safety measures, where to exit, and expectations of students.
Have a practice run with your grade level prior to next Thursday.
Email Jim Horr if you are missing anything from your safety bucket.
Underwear Donation Drive
We are participating in an underwear donation drive to help out area families in need. This is the one item that most organizations are short of- new underwear.
All sizes are needed- toddler, children, men, and women. There is a cart parked under the staircase for these donations. Thank you!
