SLPHS Families,
Students and staff are getting settled into their schedules now that we are in the third week of school. I am appreciative of the generally smooth start to the school year we have had.
Today, please take five minutes to review important updates about the launch of SET (Support and Extension Time) next week, vandalism we’ve seen at school this week related to a TikTok challenge and plans for October.
SET begins next week
We are excited to offer students additional supports as we move deeper into the school year. Support and Extension Time (SET) is an opportunity for students to access academic support three times per week. Starting next week, students will have Support and Extension Time (SET) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays each week from 8:10 – 8:30 a.m. (Students will still have PantherPride Time Mondays and Wednesdays each week).
Schedule for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays – SET Schedule
(See the SET schedule)
- 8:10-8:40 a.m. – Support and Extension Time (SET) schedule: Students will use this time to receive academic supports and engage in extended learning opportunities. Students who ride the bus may access extension/support opportunities or have a quiet place to work until their first class begins. Students may also arrive at the start of their first class on these days if they do not need to access extension/support opportunities. Students will sign up each Friday for the following week’s sessions and will attend only those sessions they are signed up for. Students who are struggling academically may be assigned to SET supports by teachers or administration to ensure they are getting the support they need to stay on track academically.
- 8:40 a.m. – Regular 6-period day begins with 50-minute classes.
Schedule for Mondays and Wednesdays – PantherPride Time schedule
(See the PantherPride Time schedule)
- 8:10 a.m.–2:55 p.m.: Students will have a regular 6-period day with 50-minute periods and Panther Pride Time between first and second period. This is the schedule we have started this school year with and it will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays from September 27 through the end of the school year.
TikTok Challenge – Your help needed
Unfortunately, a few instances of vandalism that have been reported to us or discovered by staff are impacting an otherwise fantastic start to the year. You may have seen news reports of a TikTok challenge, called “devious licks” that is impacting schools locally and nationally. This “challenge” includes students filming themselves vandalizing and stealing items from school bathrooms. We have initiated steps to identify students participating in this unacceptable behavior, and others have come forward with information.
I encourage you to have a conversation with your student about the serious nature of this “challenge” and other social media trends like it. Any student who engages in these activities will face disciplinary action and law enforcement may be involved depending on the severity of the damage. Cameras, staff supervision and other monitoring is in place, and I’ve shared my expectations with students about how to treat our school environment and each other. To be clear, we will not tolerate any form of vandalism and disrespect to our school and staff.
Looking ahead to October
In October, we will use a tool called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) to check in on learning progress for students in 9th and 10th grade. This is an assessment tool that helps us understand student growth over time in reading and math. Our intent is that this isn’t a stressful activity but is one input for us to use to personalize learning for each student. Find more information in today’s newsletter and reach out with questions.
In addition, we also are developing our fall parent conference and communications plans. We will communicate opportunities to connect with teachers on student learning progress in the coming weeks.
The students and staff are what makes SLPHS a great place to learn and work, and aside from the Tik-Tok inspired vandalism, these first three weeks have affirmed that. I look forward to a great school year and your continued partnership.

Update immunizations by November 1
Minnesota School Immunization Laws currently require all students enrolled in school to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTap/Td/Tdap), polio, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox). One dose of the meningococcal (MCV) vaccine is due in 7th grade, and a booster dose at age 16.
Students whose immunizations are not up to date by Monday, November 1 will be excluded from school until their immunizations are current.
If you have questions about whether or not your child is due for immunizations, please contact their healthcare provider. If you are interested in access to low-income options for vaccines, please reach out to Anoka County Public Health at 763-324-4240.
Checking in on 9th and 10th grade student progress using MAP
In October, students in grades 9 and 10 will engage in Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments in reading and math. While teachers are regularly assessing progress in learning, assessments like these provide additional information about progress in reading and math over time and identify needs for more personalized support.
Our 9th and 10th grade students will participate in the MAP Growth assessments for reading and math on October 4, 5, 6, and/or 7. Each subject takes about 45 minutes. There is no need for special preparation.
We will use the information to personalize support. In addition, our school and district use information from these assessments to look at overall math and reading performance over time. This helps us determine how learning is going for all students and any potential adjustments that may be needed.
Please contact our main office, 763-600-5100, if you have questions.
