News About Parent-Teacher Conference and New Schedules Beginning December 7
Although we only have two days to this coming school week, there is a lot of information for Intermediate School parents and students in this newsletter. Please take a few minutes to look through the newsletter for information on reviewing report cards, Parent-Teacher Conferences, schedule and teacher changes to be implemented December 7, and community resources and events during the coming weeks.
Report Cards Were Distributed: This past Friday 1st quarter cards were sent home with in-person students and mailed home to 100% virtual students. Report cards were also emailed to parents of 100% virtual students. If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to review your child's report card with him or her, focusing on teacher comments as much as grades. If you have any concerns or need a follow-up conversation with your child's teacher, please take advantage of the Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for this Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24. If you have not already scheduled a Parent-Teacher Conference, please contact your child's homeroom teacher to do so.
10:33 AM Dismissal Time For Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24: Students will be dismissed at 10:33 AM on Monday, 11/23 and Tuesday. 11/24 to allow for more time for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Students will be given a bagged lunch on both days as they dismiss. We will not hold any virtual classes after 10:33 on either day.
New Student Schedules To Begin December 7: I sent a message to Intermediate Families on Friday through ParentSquare explaining that new student schedules will be sent out to parents over the Thanksgiving break. These schedules will begin December 7 and remain in effect until June 30. All students will receive a new schedule to reflect the revised in-person school day that will now dismiss at 1:15 PM. As was explained in earlier communications, we are adding staff members to accommodate the increase in in-person students while maintaining all social-distancing requirements in compliance with CDC guidelines. As a result of these new sections, there will be a number of changes that may impact who your child has for a teacher in some classes. No matter which model you child will have for the rest of the year, you can be sure that all teachers at each grade level will continue to have time to meet and coordinate instruction that is aligned to New York State Learning Standards.
Anticipated Teacher Changes For Students Beginning December 7: Making some changes to our class lists is a necessity. We would not be doing this if it were not absolutely necessary, but in order to continue to provide instruction an in-person schedule that allows for students to attend school every day in the Intermediate, it is necessary to add some classrooms and move some students to balance those classrooms. We have been in the process of filling these new positions through a combination of transfers from current Sodus teachers and the hiring of some new staff members. I am very pleased with the new or returning staff members who will be joining the Intermediate Team! All of the following moves to class lists have been discussed collaboratively with teachers during grade-level Team Meetings.
- Students Remining in a 100% Virtual Instructional Model: Students who remain 100% will receive a schedule with a new teacher who will be dedicated to just virtual students and will not have to be "split" between in-person students and virtual students. This information will be included in the schedule that is sent home
- Students Switching from a 100% Virtual Model to an In-Person Instructional Model: In most cases, students in 4th and 5th grade who are switching from the 100% virtual model will be assigned to one of the new in-person classrooms at those grade levels. In some cases, a students returning to in-person instruction will remain in his or her current homeroom if that student receives services that are only delivered in that section.
- Students Switching From a Current In-Person Teacher to a New In-Person Teacher: We have tried to limit these switches as much as possible, but in order balance classes with the additional sections, there will be a small number of students who are currently attending in-person classes who will need to switch to a new in-person teacher. Parents of students changing from a current in-person teacher to a new in-person teacher will be notified through a phone call from Michelle Bucenec, School Counselor, or from me, during the day on Monday, November 23.
This newsletter also includes some important information about the New York State Yellow Zone designation requirement for random testing, and the consent form that will need to be completed by all parents end of the day on Wednesday, November 25.
If you have any questions about information contained in this newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact me through email at ehoskins@soduscsd.org, by phone at school at 315-483-5206, or on my cell phone after school hours at 315-576-7090.

Sodus CSD Rapid Testing Parent Consent Form Due November 25
While Wayne County is not currently designated as a Yellow Zone, we want to be proactive for the random testing requirement should it become necessary. We ate asking that all parents respond to the ParentSquare survey that was sent to you by the end of the day on Wednesday, November 25, letting us know whether you give permission for your child to be randomly tested for COVID with a non-invasive nasal swab rapid test. Below is a link to the letter that Superintendent Kise posted on our website regarding this random testing, as well as a link to the NYS dashboard for county positivity rates. Thank you for completing this important form by Wednesday, November 25.

SEL Tip: Social-Emotional Learning Tips From Sodus MTSS Coordinator Kristin DeFeo
SEL is “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” Self-Awareness continues to be our focus. Skills that develop self-awareness include:
Labeling and recognizing one’s emotions
Identifying what triggers own emotions
Analyzing emotions and how they affect others
Understanding the relationship between one’s emotions, thoughts and behaviors
Recognizing one’s needs, values, judgments, and biases
Identifying personal strengths and areas for growth
Practicing self-compassion
Cultivating self-confidence, positive self-regard, a “growth” mindset, and optimism
As we enter into the Holiday Season in a time that is just different, this week’s tip focuses on “Self Compassion” and the importance of taking a short break to acknowledge your stress, feel less isolated, and offer yourself kind words.
