Ten Minute Meetings
Counselors will be meeting with students for a spring check-in through our ten minute meetings! Counselors are sending an email to each grade level (students and parents) with instructions for signing up to meet with us. During this meeting, we will review each student’s high school progress, future goals, and course selections for next year. Senior meetings will focus on graduation readiness and reviewing post-high school plans.
We are eager to touch base with our students, so please encourage them to keep an eye out for the email and to schedule their meeting even if they do not have specific questions. We look forward to checking in with all our students!
We will meet with students on the following dates:
11th grade: April 7 & 8
10th grade: April 12 & 13
9th grade: April 15 & 16
12th grade: April 19 & 21
Credits and Year-Long Averaging
As we look to the end of this school year, we wanted to send a quick reminder about how credits are awarded to make sure your student meets graduation requirements. Credit is awarded on a semester basis, and it is an average of the three grading periods as well as the student’s final exam. Each category is weighted equally at 25%. We like to remind students that even if they have a bad six-weeks, they can still earn credit by boosting their other six-week terms and doing well on the final. For example, a 55, 75, and 75 for grading periods, with a 75 on the final, will average out to 70% for the semester! The semester average is the grade that goes on the high school transcript (thus, the grade used for college applications).
Additionally, year-long classes are awarded credit based on the year-long average. For example, if a student failed the first semester with a 65, but they make a 75 or higher this semester, they will get credit for both semesters since their yearly average is 70 or above.
Please keep this in mind as we begin the final six-weeks grading period of the year on April 12 and in preparation for finals. If you have any questions about your student’s credits, please reach out to their school counselor.
EOC Tests At Bowie
EOC tests will be administered at JBHS this spring. Comprehensive information about EOC testing was emailed to parents of 9th and 10th grade students via School Messenger on April 2. In case you missed this in your Inbox, please check for it. If you have a Junior, your letter will be mailed shortly.
Information about EOC testing is also on the JBHS website.
Finish Strong, Y'all!
We are nearly through a very challenging year, but we are not done yet. The last grading term and finals are still ahead. It's the perfect time to heat up that resiliency muscle and give it the very best you've got!
Please keep in mind these things:
- Study skills are imperative to high school success
- We are running a Study Skills Group for 9th grade and one for 10-12 grade. If you are interested in being a part of this group, please reach out to your counselor.
- Your counseling team and teachers are here for you, simply reach out!
- We are open and invite you to return to campus. Being on campus has a plethora of benefits: re-establishing routines, connecting with teachers, focusing on academics, meeting other students. It's a win! Please let counselor know your plans to return and we'll get you set up.
