In the News
From the Principal's Desk
It was wonderful to see the families that braved the cold snowy night to join us for our literacy night earlier this month. Thank you for taking the time out to instill the joy of reading and encourage your child's early literacy skills with us! We had a great time!
As a reminder, please keep an extra set of clothes in your child's backpack to use in the event of an emergency and change it to match the weather seasonally. In the event a child might need a change of clothes, we do try to keep extras on hand in the nurses office. If your child is sent home with clothes from the nurse, please wash them and return them to school at your earliest opportunity.
There will be no school December 24-January 4th due to winter break, teacher professional learning time and a work day. Enjoy this this time with your family and friends, taking time to slowing down and enjoying those around you. You can keep the learning going over the break by finding fun ways to incorporate learning into daily routines. Have your child join you when cooking and count out items to put into the recipe, say nursery rhymes when driving in the car, look for letters on the store fronts and containers you put into the cart at the grocery store or snuggle up with a good book each day.
Parents you are always welcome in the building to see what is happening, and we want you here. However we do ask all parents contact their child's teacher, sign in the office and get a visitor badge before proceeding to the classroom and checking out through the office before you leave!
Notes from the Associate Special Education Coordinator
Hello SMECEC Families!
December is a time for learning, leisure time together and travel. Why not combine them and help your kids learn in everyday situations AND while you travel? Here’s a great app, website and activities I found that offer fun ways to challenge your kids and boost their brains. It’s called Vroom- App, Website, Activities
Until next time…..Learn, Teach, Reflect, Grow, Repeat!

Notes from the School Nurse:
Illness Reminders
Parents please remember the guidelines for keeping your child at home when they are ill. As most are aware Influenza (flu) is once again hitting on area. That is why it is so important to keep your child home when they are ill and for 24 hours after vomiting/fever breaks (without the use of fever reducing medications). Please click on the link for more information from the CDC regarding the flu. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/family/flu-guide-for-parents-2018.pdf Thank you so much for your help in keeping our school healthy!
Early Childhood Screening
Do you have concerns about your preschooler’s development?
SMSD offers an early childhood developmental screening which includes the areas of vision, hearing, problem-solving, personal-social development, gross/fine motor skills, and speech/language skills. The purpose of the screening is to identify children who may have substantial developmental delays and who may be eligible for special education services. SMSD’s Early Childhood Screening (ECS) is appropriate for children ages 2 years 9 months to 5 years old who reside within the Shawnee Mission School District boundaries.
How often are screenings offered?
Screenings for 2018-19 occur monthly on a Friday morning and are by appointment only. Parent or other legal guardian must complete a request for screening and submit the required documents before an appointment is offered.
How do I request a screening for my child?
More information about the ECS program can be found on the district’s Early Childhood Special Education home page under Early Childhood Screening.
