2020-2021, Issue #13: March 1, 2021

Dear KAS Community,

We are so grateful to Mr. Dan Castelaz, our high school Visual Arts teacher, who has arranged for an exhibit of art work from Luba Lukova. Internationally-renowned, New York-based Luba Lukova is regarded as one of the most original image-makers working today. Whether by using an economy of line, color, and text to pinpoint essential themes of humanity or to succinctly visualize social commentary, her work is undeniably powerful and thought-provoking.

Lukova's work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Denver Art Museum; Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; Hong Kong Heritage Museum; Centre de la Gravure et de l'Image imprimée, La Louvière, Belgium; the Library of Congress; and the World Bank, Washington, D.C.

Mr. Castelaz’s classes will have opportunities to interact with the artist over the course of the two-week exhibition, and all classes on campus will have a chance to see the work in the Media Center.

We would also like to invite all parents who are interested to join us for a viewing on March 18, from 4:30 - 5:30. More information will come later, but please save the date if you are interested.

Big picture

All exams (other than Chinese exams) will take place in the Lecture Hall. Students should be outside of the exam site 15 minutes before the exam.

March is here and that means that most of our Class of 2021 students will be learning about their college admissions decisions. Remember to check each university portal and your junk email box on a weekly basis, so you do not miss any important correspondence from any of your universities/colleges. Make sure to inform your College Counselor of your results and please remember that if you are admitted to your ED university, you MUST withdraw all applications, including EA and all applications around the world. For most U.S. schools, they will require a response and your final decision with a deposit by May 1 or June 1.

Gr 11 students who may need to take an ACT or SAT exam are recommended to register for the May, August or September exams. Most universities will continue to not require SATs for next year; however, it is still recommended to check the universities' official website. TOEFL or iELTS are also recommended and we encourage students to take this test during the summer break.

How the pandemic is shaking up college admissions and testing

New 3-part series from PBS Newshour gives an update on how COVID affected recent college admissions. With many college admissions testing sites closing down during the pandemic, as many as 50 percent of early applications arrived without any test scores this year. That's resulted in some top-ranked schools seeing a surge in applications, but elsewhere, application numbers are flat or even down.
