Tips on Managing Your Time Online
We know that managing technology use can be a challenge any time of the year, but especially during this time of distance learning. As a department, we wanted to offer resources to support families and students better manage their time spent on technology.
If you feel like your screens are running your life, these 3 tips on how to reclaim your screen time might be helpful. The first step is to understand your usage. Many phones and tablets can now track the amount of time you spend on them collectively and on each app. Studies show many times people significantly underestimate how much time they spend on their devices. Take time to reflect on your usage so you properly understand how much time you’re spending on your devices. The second step is to turn off your notifications. If your apps are set to send you push notifications, change this in your settings. This can significantly reduce the amount of time you are spending on your phone. Finally, create limits for your devices. Many phones now allow you to set limits on certain apps and on the device as a whole. Take time to consider what might be good limits for you to set personally, or as a family.
Data Detox is a great resource for students if they are looking to take control of their technology. This toolkit gives students the tools to consider their technology usage and digital lives and make a plan for how they want to be in control of their technology. As many students feel unable to stop using their technology, this can be a good reflective activity to help them feel more in control and confident in the way the live their lives.
If you just want to understand more about your student’s technology usage or you have questions about the applications your student is using, Common Sense Media can be a great resource. On here you can create your own question or look up preexisting questions and get answers from other parents and students.
Overall, we hope that all students and families feel empowered to use their technology in a way that serves them rather than feeling like they’re serving it. If you have questions or concerns about your students technology usage and you want support please use these resources and feel free to reach out to your student’s counselor to talk more.
Thinking of a 2-year Community or Technical College?
The ACCUPLACER has historically been used as a placement test for community and technical colleges. Due to COVID-19, there are many changes to this requirement and these updates are found below. The Minnesota State System has come up with multiple measures which now includes High School GPA to be used toward course placement, instead of the ACCUPLACER. A cumulative GPA of 2.6 can have them exempt from the reading portion and a 2.8 from the math portion- a great incentive for seniors to do well this year and then not have to worry about a placement test/ be in college level courses!
