Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
September 27, 2019
A Wonderful Week!
It was another action-packed week in 3rd Grade. The field trip to The Benjamin Harrison Home was amazing. We learned so much about immigration. I am always so proud of our students' behavior. They represent SRE very well!
Your children earn DOJO Points for going above and beyond in all areas throughout their day at school. They can also lose points for unexpected behaviors. They use their points in our DOJO Store. I open the store Friday afternoons - every two weeks. Some parents have asked if donations are needed for the Dojo Store. The answer to that is always - YES! If you have items laying around your house that you think eight and nine year olds would love to purchase in the store, feel free to send them in. I have a basket of goodies that are sold for 25-50 points. I also have coupons students can purchase. A few examples of coupons:
- bring a stuffed animal to school, treat from the treat drawer, lunch with Mrs. Greene, stay after school and help Mrs. Greene, extra recess, visit the makerspace with a friend, sit on a bouncy ball for the week, chew gum in class for a day.
- THANK YOU TO KRISTIN BUNNELL who generously donated some items to our store today. The kids will love them!
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your long weekend!

A few student highlights from our week:
- Ben was struggling to wake up and get his brain into learning mode on Monday morning. After a quick "pep talk" Ben really turned it around and had a GREAT day of learning. It was a pleasure to see him value his teacher's thoughts enough to make positive changes for himself.
- Gabe was working with a partner on a Word Study activity. I was working with a few students when I overheard Gabe's words..."We're done...now what do we do? I know... now we can PAR-TAY!" As he said, "par-tay," he spun around in a circle. I gave him "the look" but I was secretly cracking up inside. See why I have a GREAT job??
- Ady is such a hard working 3rd Grader. When something gets tough, she digs in and gives it her all until she feels like she understands the concept. She's inspiring to watch!
- Reid... his laugh is just the best. When I read a funny part in our read-aloud, he can't help it and just belts out his adorable laugh. It makes me start laughing!
THESE KIDS ARE JUST SO MUCH FUN TO SPEND MY DAYS WITH!

Next Week...
- We will continue working on SMART goals and working on the following skills:
*character traits
*making predictions in fiction text
Math: Unit 2 - Number Stories and Array
Our work next week will focus on working through Number Stories - single and multi-step problems. This can be challenging for 3rd graders.
Congratulations to Ginga and Rayan for mastering ADDITION in xtramath. They received a certificate and a treat from the treat drawer for their hard work. I have several students very close to completing this level. Keep encouraging your child to work on this at home. It makes a huge difference in the progress made each day when introducing new concepts.
Writing: Personal Narratives
- Transitions in fiction writing
- When do I make a new paragraph?
- Similes - Metaphors: How can these help make my writing more descriptive?
Social Studies: Unit 4 Settling in the United States
We are playing a game about immigration. It's an experiential exercise where the students get to experience what it felt like to be one of the first immigrants to come to the United States.
Word Study:
Next week we will learn about Consonant + le Syllables. Here is our weekly schedule for Word Study activities:
- Monday: Introduce new spelling skill - practice breaking words into syllables
- Tuesday: Introduce new morphology skill (prefixes, suffixes, roots)
- Wednesday: Word building with morphology
- Thursday: Practice new skills and review all learned
- Friday: Test/Quiz
I have a few resources on Canvas that can be used to practice the word study skills at home. Feel free to encourage your child to use these resources as a way to cement their learning of information presented in class.
