First Grade Weekly News Update

October 14, 2016

This week our first graders have continued to work hard on their reading skills. We have been learning about digraph sounds in phonics (sh, ch, wh, th, and ck) and writing words words with the short vowel sounds. I am very pleased with the spelling tests each week and how well the students are doing with their writing dictation. Please continue to practice the words at home and remind your child to read their DEB books to you on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Please make sure your child has a set of WORKING headphones at school.

This week the first graders worked on the Ipads using an app called Explain Everything. It was great to use these Ipads to show our thinking as we solved subtraction problems. Please ask your student about the experience!

Guest Readers

Our classroom is looking for parents to come in on Friday afternoons to read to our students. Please email Mrs. Cannis if you are interested in coming in to read us some of your favorite picture books.

Writing/Research project

In this week's Friday folder, a research report was sent home. Please help your student complete the questions about a particular spider that they would like to know more about. We will be sharing these reports in class on Tuesday, October 25 so we are asking that they be completed and returned by Monday, October 24. Again, I greatly appreciate your support and cooperation. In class, we are reading non-fiction books about spiders next week and will be completing several activities to show our understanding of these interesting ARACHNIDS!!

End of the Quarter Assessments

As the end of the first quarter is drawing near, the students will be assessed on their math facts, both addition and subtraction up to 10, their reading fluency, their reading comprehension, and their writing skills. Over the next 2 weeks, we will be completing these assessments. Please check their Friday folders and their daily "blue" folder to see what we are working on.
