FIRST GRADE FLASH
GARDEN OF LEARNING-October 16
DIGGING INTO ACADEMICS
We explored the farm and learned about farm animals, producers and consumers.
We read the Little Red Hen and The Little Red Hen Gets Help. We compared different versions of the Little Red Hen.
We made Tacos.
We learned about words with short e...en, et, ell
We wrote informational pieces about chickens.
We practiced subtraction strategies.
We practiced writing sentences distinguishing between the naming part and telling part of a sentence.
We learned to retell and summarize and learn about story elements...characters, setting, events, beginning, middle, end.
We had Farm, Fall and Pumpkin Centers where we....weighed and measured pumpkins, did a sink and float experiment, made butter and learned about how it is made, learned about chickens and saw real chickens and a bunny, did "eggsperiments", cut open a pumpkin and scooped out the insides, and made apple prints and leaf rubbings.
We helped plant the KINDNESS GARDEN and attended the dedication.
Digging Deeper
PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS!
We will continue to explore the farm and learn about farm animals, pumpkins, producers and consumers.
We will read Pumpkin, Pumpkin and learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin.
We will learn about Fall.
No new spelling words.
We will write informational pieces about pumpkins.
We will have a "Mock "Pumpkin stand where we will use our adding, subtraction, writing, and money skills to learn about pumpkins.
We will practice addition and subtraction strategies.
We will practice writing sentences distinguishing between the naming part and telling part of a sentence.
We will learn about Fiction vs. Nonfiction
We will begin a unit on SPIDERS.
We will summarize and learn about story elements...characters, setting, events, beginning, middle, end.
We will visit Savidge Farms...wear blue Shoemaker Shirt and pack a lunch!

VISIT TO THE FARM
PLEASE WEAR SHOEMAKER SHIRTS AND BRING A LUNCH IN A DISPOSABLE BAG ON FRIDAY.
On Friday, October 23rd , the first grade classes will be taking a field trip to Savidge Farm. Students will get to rotate through several stations as they learn about life on the farm including a hay ride to the pumpkin patch. Each student will also bring home a pumpkin. The PTO will be covering the cost of the buses and the $5.00 admission cost. Please sign and return the permission slip to school ASAP.

KINDNESS KORNER
We read Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed...and learned about acts of kindness.
Please look for our KIndness Flowers...students are asked to perform acts of kindness, record on the flower, color, cut out and return the flower for our kindness Garden.
We will be making seed medallions this month to kick off our Kindness Garden.
On Friday, October 16th we had the Shoemaker Kindness Garden Dedication and planting of trees and flowers. Two Buddy benches were placed in the garden for students to have a place to go when feeling sad or lonely.
