Youth And Government Travels To State Capital
The Howell Youth and Government organization traveled to Jefferson City for it's annual State Convention this week. Youth and Government (YAG) is a student-driven simulation of state government, which involves 1,000 Missouri youth in grades 8-12. Beginning in the fall of each year, students come together in their local delegations to choose their roles, register and prepare for the State Convention. At the State Convention, students create their version of state government under the guidelines of the Missouri Constitution. All participants in Missouri come together for this three-day event at the State Capitol. Legislators meet in committees and in the House and Senate chambers to debate legislation. Attorneys try their cases before student judges and engage in a moot trial competition. The entire event is covered by a student newspaper, published four times in three days, and by a student television news program that airs several times each day. Participants also engage in campaigns and elections for officers who will serve during the following year. You can find a recap of the highlights from the three days below. Congratulations to our 57 students that attended this great event.
Howell Highlights
- Andrea Lin received the Best Written Bill Award
- Tara Anderson and Lera Ramsay received the Most Debatable Bill Award.

- Alex Li was chosen to try a case in the final rounds of court cases
- Rebecca Amos was chosen as the Co-Editor in Chief of Print Media for the convention next year.
Artist Spotlight - Mackinna Leigh
All About Me - Mackinna Leigh
My Name is Mackinna Leigh and I am a senior, and I am excited to be chosen as the featured photographer this semester. I have always loved photography ever since my Uncle got me my first pink Coplix camera when I was 7. I remember taking it everywhere I went and just documenting everything.
I was always told, even back then, that I had an eye for being creative with my pictures, so I continued to take pictures and get better. I’ve always enjoyed sports photography, with my sister running track and cross country and my brother always playing soccer, I always had something to take pictures of. I still continue to take a lot of sports pictures, but now I also take people's senior pictures and random creative ideas.
I’ve really enjoyed D.A.D, because it has forced me to connect with my creative imagination. Having to come up with new ideas for pictures for topics such as boring object or destruction has been like a game for me, It’s one of my favorite parts of my day. I really hope you enjoy my pictures.
