Family Monday Memo

Week of September 25, 2023

Hello Snowden Families,

As parents, you play a crucial role in supporting our children's academic journey, especially when it comes to helping them excel in test-taking. On this year, your child will take lots of tests at the school , district and state levels. Test-taking can be an anxiety-inducing experience for many children, but with the right guidance and support, we can empower them to perform their best. I would like to provide you with some tips and strategies that you can utilize to assist your child

in taking tests effectively.

1. Establish a Positive Mindset:
Encouraging a positive mindset is essential for your child's test success. Emphasize that tests are not just about grades, but also an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills. Teach them that mistakes are part of the learning process and that setbacks should not define their abilities. By fostering a growth mindset, you can help your child approach tests with confidence and enthusiasm.

2. Create a Supportive Study Environment:
A suitable study environment plays a significant role in helping children perform well on tests. Ensure that your child has a quiet, well-organized space where they can concentrate without distractions. Encourage them to personalize their study area with inspiring quotes or artwork, making it a comfortable and inviting place for learning.

3. Teach Effective Time Management:
Teaching your child effective time management skills is crucial for test preparation. Help them create a study schedule that allows for ample time to cover all subjects, while also incorporating breaks for relaxation and rejuvenation. Encourage them to prioritize tasks based on their difficulty level and allocate more time to challenging subjects. By mastering time management, your child will feel more prepared and less overwhelmed during test periods.

4. Practice Regular Revision:
Consistent revision is key to test success. Encourage your child to review class materials regularly rather than cramming the night before the test. Help them develop effective study techniques, such as creating flashcards, summarizing key concepts, or explaining topics aloud to reinforce their understanding. Regular revision not only enhances memory retention but also boosts confidence and reduces anxiety.

5. Encourage Healthy Habits:
Physical and mental well-being significantly impact a child's test performance. Encourage your child to maintain a balanced lifestyle by getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and engaging in physical activities. Regular exercise helps reduce stress and promotes cognitive function, while a healthy diet provides the necessary nutrients for optimal brain function.

6. Promote Test-Taking Strategies:
Teach your child various test-taking strategies to help them navigate different types of exams. Practice techniques such as skimming passages before answering questions, underlining keywords, and eliminating obviously incorrect options in multiple-choice questions. Familiarize them with time management during the test, emphasizing the importance of reading instructions carefully and allocating time for revision before submitting their answers.

7. Offer Emotional Support:
During the test period, emotional support from parents is crucial. Reassure your child that you believe in their abilities and that you are proud of their efforts. Be available to listen to their concerns and offer guidance when needed. Remind them that test scores do not define their worth and that mistakes are opportunities for growth. Your unwavering support and understanding will boost their confidence and help them face tests with a positive mindset.

By implementing these tips and strategies, parents can provide valuable support to their children, enabling them to excel in tests. Remember that each child is unique, and it is important to tailor your approach to their individual needs. By fostering a positive mindset, creating a supportive study environment, teaching effective time management, encouraging regular revision, promoting healthy habits, teaching test-taking strategies, and offering emotional support, you can empower your child to approach tests with confidence and achieve their full potential.

National Hispanic Heritage Month:

The District’s observance of Hispanic Heritage Month is one of the many ways we show appreciation for the families and communities that give spirit and culture to Memphis and Shelby County.

Neighbors across the street on McClean

Families, our neighbors across the street (directly in front of the gym) have asked that we refrain from allowing our students to wait on their property to be picked up afterschool. I am asking that you please adhere to this request. They have been so gracious with us down through the years. Please make arrangements to get in the car line or determine another meeting location. Administration will be on site redirecting the students. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Speeding Tickets Warning!!

One of our Snowden families just received two separate speeding tickets in the mail from mornings in January, from the camera on McClean, which was surprising because they were certainly cautious and careful driving through after dropping off their child.

Our Snowden parents wanted to reach out because they would hate for other Snowden families to be surprised with a ticket in the mail. Those cameras are active and tickets are $50!

The Bike Lane

Families, many of you park in the bike lane in the morning and in the afternoon to pick up and drop off your children and that is fine. However, we are asking that you do so as expeditiously as possible and do not remain for extended periods of time. This is a public bike lane and we have many riders that are trying to ride through. Thanks for your help with this.
