John is one of the custodians here at Hubbs! He has worked at Hubbs for four years and has worked within the St. Paul Public School district for 27 years. He enjoys the consistent job that he has at Hubbs. John is retiring this coming September, and he is looking forward to it! Outside of working at Hubbs, he loves to golf, spend time with his family and friends, and watch sports! Hubbs has loved having John here; say hi and thank him for his service to the St. Paul Public schools next time you see him!
Hubbs Center Summer Challenge!
Congratulations to Lydell Johnson and Anatolia Dominguez Sanchez. These students won laptops for their work in distance learning platforms this year. Well done, students!
Are you wondering how you can earn a laptop too? This summer we have a new contest for students attending summer classes. Any student who studies 110 hours on a distance learning platform from June to August can win a laptop! The 110 hours are cumulative and include these platforms: Edmentum, MobyMax, ReadTheory, ReadWorks, Vocab A-Z, CommonLit, Khan Academy, MyEnglishLab, MyLab, Northstar, and USA Learns. Happy studying!
Hubbs’ Distance Learning staff will keep track of the hours you earn and notify you in early September if you’ve won a laptop.
Interview with Leah Myott, Hubbs Teacher
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."― Mahatma Gandhi
Leah has had a very interesting life and it has come full circle to the Hubbs Center. Born in Texas, her family moved to St. Paul when she was 12. In high school, she went to Germany with a school group. She later majored in German at the University of Minnesota. During that time, she worked as a nursing assistant in many nursing homes in the Twin Cities. As a volunteer with Literacy Minnesota, she tutored adults learning English as their second language. At that time in her life, she discovered that she enjoyed making a difference in the lives of others.
After graduating from college, Leah wanted to become an ESL teacher. At the same time, she felt she needed more life experience and more money before going to graduate school. With this in mind, she joined the Navy. She wound up stationed in Honolulu, the perfect place to become an ESL teacher. While on active duty in Hawaii, she used her GI Bill and tuition benefits to get her Master’s in TESOL from Hawaii Pacific University. It was there that she met many interesting students and classmates. After getting out of the Navy, she taught English, mostly to students from Japan, at a language school in Waikiki.
After many years away, she returned to Minnesota. She worked as an Adult Basic Education teacher at the International Education Center for over 12 years until it closed in 2020. After that, she volunteered, subbed and taught at various organizations, including Literacy Minnesota and the Hubbs Center. She’s been with the Hubbs Center for a couple of years now. She is very happy to be back in St. Paul, serving people in her community as a teacher. For her, it’s coming back full circle to the place she started - teaching what she really enjoys to great students. When she’s not teaching at the Hubbs Center, Leah enjoys spending time with her husband, her son and her cat.
