Here's what's happening in MS this week!

Dear parents,
The end of the 1st marking period is Friday, October 26.
ENGLISH
6th Grade: Students will have an article of the week on Monday. Their ½ page responses to the article will be due on Tuesday, when we will also complete a Metacognitive Reading Log. The log prompts them to reflect on their recent narrative reading of choice. We will also be reading a short story by Oscar Wilde titled, “The Selfish Giant,” while students identify elements of plot. The students have a list of Sixth Grade Literary Terms that we will be utilizing throughout the year, and with the short story mentioned above.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: We have been reviewing main ideas and key terms from our Early Human studies. We will be having a test on Tuesday over this material. We will be moving on to Early River Valley Civilizations next.
7th Grade: We have been reviewing main ideas and key terms from our Early Human studies. We will be having a test on Tuesday over this material. We will be moving on to Early River Valley Civilizations next.
MATH
6th Grade: We have been comparing fractions with decimals and learning how to convert one to the other. This week we will continue comparing and also ordering the numbers on a number line.
7th Grade: This week we will be finishing our chapter on rational numbers by applying problems that involve fractions and decimals in real life. Some of these applications include cooking, carpentry, and financial situations.
8th Grade: This week we will finish our chapter on proportional relationships. We will see the formula y=mx+b for the first time. We will also talk about how to interpret slope in the real world.
SCIENCE
6th Grade: We are working on researching different ecosystems and creating presentations to share our research. Presentations will be due on Thursday 10/25. We will also be continuing our study of ecosystems through various activities.
7th Grade: Weather projects were due on the 19th for full credit, late projects may be turned in at the beginning of the week. Students have received the project grade based on what they have turned in as of 10/19.
8th Grade: We had a quiz on nonrenewable energy on Wednesday. Students are allowed to retake this quiz next week before Friday but just this particular quiz. We will begin studying renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric and looking at advantages and disadvantages of each.
ART
6th Grade: We will be finishing up our one point perspective project with watercolor and pens. In our remaining days we might get to work with colored pencils. Friday the 26th is our last class together. Hope to see you all at conferences.
