St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 4, WEEK 2 | 24 OCTOBER 2019
"Trust in God who helps you in all things."
St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
We have had a great start to the term. The students have settled in well and are well on track to meet the terms requirements.
From 2020, St Columba’s will have a new Assistant Principal. Miss Alison Purvis has been appointed to the role and will be a full time Assistant Principal with no teaching role.
There are a number of families walking through the Kiss and Drive car entry. Please be aware that this is not an entry spot for pedestrians. Families entering on foot near the Church must enter through the Church pedestrian gate not the car entry gate. I would also ask that families do not use mobile phones during Kiss and Drive. In the interests of our students’ safety please follow these protocols.
I am advising families that classes will be reshuffled in preparation for the 2020 school year. The teachers will look at a number of criteria in reorganising the classes. As always it is a school decision where students are placed and parents are asked not to request particular teachers as this is a decision for myself as Principal.
Please find attached information regarding a school survey on the school climate. I would ask families to please take time to complete this survey as it will help the school continue to grow and improve. There is an internet address and code at the top of the sheet that families will be required to enter to access the online survey.
The school Board and P&F AGMs are being held on Monday 11 November at 7:00pm in the Kalyara Mia undercover area. Please find attached information and nomination forms.
A reminder that students will finish school this term on Friday 13 December 2019.

9.15am: Prayer Service in the Church
9.45am: Morning Tea (All children receive a cupcake at recess.)
Children may sit with their grandparents in the church. Students who do not have a grandparent or friend attending will sit with their teachers. Please return the permission slip if you would like a grandparent or friend to walk your child to and from Church.
Kindy and Pre-Primary will celebrate the occasion in their classrooms.
We've been practising our soccer skills in Physical Education, with the help of Grasshopper Soccer coaches. Another great opportunity to hone our skills and learn about teamwork.
Scitech Challenge Day
On Tuesday, two Year 5/6 teams participated in the Scitech Challenge Day. The challenge: How might we re-purpose materials to design a product that improves life at school? Both teams displayed initiative, team work and innovative thinking as they designed their prototype. Congratulations must go to Guinevere, Skyla, Edith and Matilda who were awarded 1st place in their group with their design for a mobility scooter.
Both teams had to interview another school to determine a need and design a product that would cater for that need. The school they were designing the products for had students with visual impairments and mobility problems. The girls made a mobility scooter so that children with mobility problems could move around the school more easily. The boys designed a lift so that all students with disability could feel safe and included at school.
Year 6's RAC Excursion
On the 24th of September 2019, the Year 6's went to the Old Mill to participate in the RAC Imagine Program. There were 6 activities to do. Students were split into five groups beforehand, and each group rotated around the different activities. The 6 activities were: Virtual Reality of a RAC helicopter rescue experience, a tour around the Old Mill, a ride on the driverless RAC Intellibus, AV Technology, the coding behind the Intellibus and creating your own form of transport for a specific client. We learnt many interesting facts as we undertook the activities. Overall, the Year 6's enjoyed themselves, as it was a fantastic experience.

Artist of the Week
Gabi in Year 6 is the Artist of the Week. She was chosen for her beautiful Japanese painting. To make her artwork, Gabi used black ink and water. Her favourite thing about her piece is the shading. Gabi finds art fun because she can use her imagination to do lots of different things.

Kindy 2020 Places Have Become Available
Due to an unusually high number of enrolled families moving out of Perth or interstate, a few Kindergarten places have become available for 2020. Our Kindy is usually booked up two years in advance, so this presents an opportunity for local families who may have missed the 2020 interviews.
We also have limited places in other select year groups for next year.
Please contact the school administration for application for enrolment details.
Parents and Friends
The P&F hope that everyone has settled back into school for the last term which is already going fast.
We had our P&F meeting on Tuesday night and it was a big one with lots of discussions. I thank everyone who came and voiced their opinions and advice. It's what we like - community discussion.
The final net amount raised from the Bingo night which was held on the 13 September was $13,800. Thank you to the wonderful businesses and families for the many donations received and for everyone's help.
We have our annual tea towel promotion on at present. $15 each - a great gift or to put in your child's memory box from school. Thank you to the Kindy Reps for organising these this year.
The children have been working hard with Mrs Govorko in their art classes creating 'art on cards' that will be able to be purchased through Cards for Cards Online. More information will follow next week. A great fundraiser and gifts.
Remember to put in your calendar the school Christmas Concert and the P&F Sundowner on the Friday 6 December. We have booked a pizza food truck to assist with feeding families with the rush from work. More information will follow.
The P&F committee and all the class representatives will be going to dinner on Tuesday 26 November to say a big big Thank You for the very hard and time consuming work that has been done this year. No gifts are to be bought for your class reps as the dinner is their thank you gift.
EduDance has started and is being enjoyed by all classes.
Have a great weekend.
