Library Media Center Newsletter
Where the learning never stops!
Second marking period wrapup
This newsletter will be sent home to parents once a marking period to keep everyone updated with all of the exciting activities taking place in the Library Media Center. There are lots of exciting activities taking place in the LMC. Just this month, we've had the preliminary round of the National Geographic Bee, and the high school guidance counselors met with each of the 8th grade teams to tell them all about NMHS. The TAG students' Mock Trial will also be taking place in the LMC next week. Senora O's Spanish classes worked on their country research projects in the LMC, and all of the 8th graders and most of the 7th graders used the Smart Response clickers to answer questions about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and worked in small groups to brainstorm facts about his life or his famous "I Have a Dream Speech." With the Super Bowl coming soon, 8th graders will be getting a sneak preview of some Super Bowl ads and learning what techniques advertisers use to try to get them to buy their products. You can also keep up with events in the LMC by following the LMC Twitter feed (@SMS_LMC), which has over 100 followers!
Geographic Bee champs!
National Geographic Bee moderator Mr. Hibbard poses with SMS champion Caitlin L. and runnerup Will M. after an exciting sudden-death competition. Both students did a great job! Courtney S. finished third. Mr. Bilmes ran the three rounds of the competition.
Follett Enlight Reader
This is the free app students can download onto their devices. It's all they need to check out eBooks. They need to log in to their Destiny (library) accounts and they can check out eBooks and download them onto their device.
New chair a big hit
This new rocking chair is a big hit with students hanging out in the Launch Pad, the free reading area of the LMC. Mr. Bilmes purchased it with Scholastic Dollars from the one-night book fair the PTO held last fall.
Battle of the Books underway
Good books, good prizes!
Students are busy reading the titles on this year's Battle of the Books list. The competition between English classes will start start in May. Approximately 60 students stayed after school in December to participate in the Battle of the Books Readathon. From now until May, students can go to the LMC website and answer the Battle of the Books Question of the Week. Each week, students with the correct answer have their names randomly chosen to receive a prize.
