H5N1 Bird Flu Virus
H5N1 is a highly pathogenic disease that has caused outbreaks in poultry. Highly pathogenic means viruses ability to produce disease. Most human cases are from people who come in contact with sick or dead poultry that have the H5N1 disease. 60% of people infected with the virus have died. H5N1 does not spread between people. The scientific name is Influenza Type A or H5N1. The symptoms are fever and cough, acute respiratory distress, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. There were 64 cases in 4 countries and 34 victims died. The complications you get from the virus are pneumonia, shock, altered mental state, seizures, failure of organs, and DEATH. The best way to prevent the virus is to stay away from sick or dead poultry. You cannot get infected from properly handled cooked poultry or eggs. They have a nasal spray to be tested for H5N1. There is no effective drug for treatment but oseltamivir can sometimes inhibit the virus from spreading in the body. Relenza is another drug that is said to also be effective against H5N1. The disease is mainly found in parts of Asia and the Middle East.
