A Parent Newsletter ~ Volume 1: Edition 1

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Communication is critical for school and home. In order for us to continue to improve in this area as a school, I will be sending parents a newsletter once a month via Smore (an online newsletter). This new newsletter will begin a series of newsletters that will go out to keep you all informed of the wonderful things happening here at North Newton Elementary! Teachers will share the newsletter through ClassDojo. You can also expect our usual OneCall message each week. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 464-2631 and I will be glad to talk to you!

Helping Your Child with Reading

The Five Finger Retell

Being an active part of your child's life is so important! Students are required to read at home at least 20 minutes a night to help improve their reading skills. For some students that aren't able to read yet, this may be you reading aloud to them. The students that are able to read can read independently or aloud to you. After reading, you can engage in some great retelling activities. This will help your child understand what they have read and will help them prepare for tasks at school. Check out this video on the 5 finger approach to retelling that many of our teachers use here at North Newton! If you would like a copy of the 5 finger retell you see in the video, let your child's teacher know and we will get you a copy!

Hitting the Gong

Student motivation is critical and an area where we want to improve as a school. Our SIT team discussed this summer at our opening retreat about getting a gong for our students to ring when they reach their goal. The goal could be for their reading level in mClass, CASE 21 goals, or AR goals. Teachers may send students to the office to ring the gong on the morning announcements.

The gong dates back to the Bronze Age which was around 3500 BC. Burma, China, Java, and Annam were the four main manufacturers of the gong. This instrument has a history of being used to call people to a meal, to begin mass in some churches, and many other uses.

We love using the gong as a celebration tool for meeting our goals!

Randon Acts of Kindness

Last week, Mrs. Thigpen's class made cards for several staff members to encourage them and brighten their day! These students called this deed a "random act of kindness." We appreciate our students showing how much they care for others!

North Newton Spelling Bee Winners!

Congratulations to North Newton's top five Spelling Bee winners Brianna Brown, Anna Boggs, Samual White, AJ Griffith, and Edwin Hernandez-Gonzalez! These students will be going to the District Spelling Bee on Friday. We wish them all the best! Thank you for representing North Newton so well!

Parent Reminders

Please remember the following items to help us as a school!

  • You must have a doctor's not for sign-out after 2:30. Instructional time is very important to us and we do not want your child to miss this time in class.
  • Student drop off does not begin until 7:35! Please do not drop your students off before this time at the front or side of the building. Our car rider staff will be out when car riders begin at 7:35. The doors will be locked in the mornings until this time.
  • Send in lunch money with your child to keep your account current. If you need a free and reduced lunch form, please let your child's teacher know and we will get one to you.
  • If you have a new number, please get that to your child's teacher so we can update it in Powerschool. We need to be able to contact you in case of emergency.
