Home Language Survey Reminder - The questions are about the student, not the parent.
The purpose of the Home Language Survey should be explained to families and then signed at the bottom of the form by the school staff member who discussed the HLS with the family. We are to look for a language other than English on the three student specific questions ONLY:
1) What is the native language of the student? (the language the student first spoke)
2) What language(s) is spoken most often by the student?
3) What language(s) is spoken by the student in the home?
What if the parent speaks another language? The student qualifies for testing only if there is a language written other than English.
What if the parent says their child understands their language but can not speak their language?
If a parent says their child understands their language but does not speak the language, the student does not qualify for testing.
